Hi :3

I am new to this site and just made an account to ask this question. I'm adopting a cat , and so in preparation I've been doing a lot of research trying to find out the best diet I can give my cat (unfortunately raw is not something I'm confident in - my own abilities, not the diet itself) and have decided to feed wet cat food.

I was originally planning to feed solely Granatapet, but when working out the amount of protein my cat would receive, I felt it was a little on the low side (but still adequate for a house cat), because the calorie content of the food is so high I wouldn't be able to feed much.

So, I was planning to supplement the Granatapet with some Cosma, which has a high meat content and decent protein content but with very little fat. It seemed like a perfect balance between complete food and supplementary food, but now I'm worried my kitty wouldn't get enough fat!

I checked out a Google document a vet had compiled that someone really helpfully posted on an older thread I was reading on this site, and apparently the calories from Granatapet are nearly 60% fat, which sounds like a lot to me. Supplementing with Cosma would provide about 40% calories from fat and about 60% from protein, does this sound okay?

I'm so confused trying to work it out, I have read that a cat needs at least 9% fat, but I don't know if that means 9% of the food, 9% of the calories or what.
And I'm also struggling to work out if my feeding Plan satisfies either kind of 9% requirement.... The cat would be getting between 7.8 and 8.5g fat per day, depending on canned food variety. Is that enough, does anyone know?

So sorry for the ridiculously waffle-y and confusing post, I just wasn't to feed the most species appropriate diet I can from canned food, and I want to do right by my future little rescue kitty so she is as happy and healthy as can be :3

Hi, and welcome to TCS :wavey:

I think you're tying yourself in knots needlessly. Granatapet is a great food, and one I feed myself. With wet food, it's a good idea to feed a range of brands, both for variety (and to stop your cat getting bored ;) ) and in case of recalls or discontinuation. So long as you're feeding a high meat, low carb complete food you'll be doing just fine :)

Do bear in mind that Cosma is a supplementary food, meaning that it isn't nutritionally complete. These types of foods are best reserved for special treats instead of an everyday food.

Just to give you an idea, the brands in my food rotation are :-

  • Catz Fineood
  • Purr by Catz Finefood
  • GranataPet
  • Thrive Complete
  • Feringa
  • Bozita tetrapacks (in sauce/in jelly)
  • Animonda Carny
  • Animonda vom Feinsten
  • Nature's Menu.............................. } Not from
  • Country Hunter by Nature's Menu } Zooplus
I also keep a supply of Cosma Snackies and/or Thrive freeze dried treats for crumbling over food for a change (or to encourage them to eat a less favoured flavour).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding a canned diet. A bit of good quality kibble is fine too. Raw feeding can work brilliantly, but there are pitfalls, and it isn't for everyone. It's a very valid choice, but it's not the ONLY valid choice. Ultimately, the best food for your cat is the one he/she will happily eat. The best food in the world is useless unless it gets inside the cat! ;) [article="29707"][/article][article="31089"][/article][article="31127"][/article][article="32669"][/article][article="31120"][/article][article="31141"][/article][article="32765"][/article][article="29646"][/article]

Hey :)

Thanks so much! You're right, I am being a little crazy about this....

Based on your advise I think I'll avoid the supplementary type foods as a regular thing and just stick with the best quality complete foods from your list :)

Again, thanks so much for your reply, that list is soo helpful!
