My cat is 8 weeks and 1 day pregnant and I have just noticed her knitting and licking my fluffy bed cover. Is she preparing for having to wash her kittens ? Is this normal?
It sounds like she may be starting to nest. Can you set up some more appropriate nesting areas for her? Think dark, quiet areas, like a closet with a door ajar.
Now is also the time to buy some kitten supplies. A small scale that weighs in grams, powdered kitten milk replacer (we like PetAg but always tell people to avoid Hartz), and a needleless syringe are all important.
Can you keep mom 100% inside and away from intact males until her litter has weaned?
I have a several different nesting places set out for her and some scales already but I haven't got any powder milk or syringes yet.
There is a male cat in the house with her I assumed she would be fine with him ? And I don't know about keeping her in because we always have windows and doors open, I assumed once they are born she won't want to go out and leave them for very long anyway ?
The issue is that female cats can get pregnant again within a week of delivery, regardless of whether they go into heat or not. This is a problem because it is brutal to their bodies, and also causes them to abandon their first litter far too early. Mom will go into heat and mom will leave her kittens. She will not stay with them all the time anyway.
It is up to you to 100% separate her from any males who could impregnate her.
You may have to work something out with a dark drape and a fan in your bedroom eventually. You don't want mama leaving her kittens when she goes into heat, and coming back pregnant again; and you surely don't want the kittens getting out the windows when they get big enough to climb and jump.
