Hi!

I took my 2 year old male to his neutering appointment. Vet suggested a blood panel, and since I'm completely paranoid (as you can tell if you've seen my previous posts) I immediately agreed, signed the form and went home. Two hours later I get a call from the vet. Not only cat is a bit dehydrated, but the vet says his liver is about 20% more damaged that it should be at his age. He will be giving him "natural medication" to help regenerate the liver and some special food. But he just couldn't explain what he meant properly and I'm kind of panicked. I've beeen searching online all day and I can't find any information. Anyone ever heard of something like a liver "20% more damaged that it should be"? Cat is big, strong, he's always been a sleepyhead but he's playful at night, eats properly, doesn't vomit, no diharrea, doesn't pee all the time, no jaundince in the white of his eye...

Should I be worried? Could it be something lethal?

Thank you!!

Try not to worry until you actually have more information.  My cat Callie had liver values that were messed up every other time she had blood drawn.  the Vet could never figure out why.  They'd be out of whack one time, then ok the next, then out of whack, then ok.  But the good news is that livers CAN regenerate, so unless they are pretty far gone, he should be able to recuperate.  Of course, finding out the issue would be best, but sometimes that's just not possible.

I've seen cats here on TCS on their deathbeds due to liver issues, and they survived, so probably your guy wlll be fine.

BTW, I did have another cat with major liver issues, and we could definitely tell something was wrong.  He couldn't keep any food down, and was extremely yellow.

That's good to know! I freaked out a little because well, he's barely two, how can his liver be damaged?

I went to pick him up and vet confirmed he couldn't find anything else that was wrong with him. I was sent home with special food and some caplets, and hopefully his liver values will be better on his follow-up appointment.

I'm kind of worried because I'm leaving the country for 3 weeks in about 1 month and a half's time (leaving him with someone else) and now that I know something is wrong I worry that the cat sitter won't pay as much attention to him as I do :(

Ah well.

Thank you!
