My 18 y.o cat suddenly began to breath hard and coughing like she had something in her throat. Now she is breathing heavily and complains from time to time. Taking her to the vet in the morning. What can it be?

I know it's been 13 hours since you posted, so hopefully have already seen a Vet.  Did they say what it was?  Often coughing is a sign of heart issues and at 18 years of age, I would not wait if it happens again.

How is she?

Thanks for you reply. Unfortunately my cat Mimi past away today at the vet. She had congestive heart failure and was not responding to the initial treatment.

As @mrsgreenjeens noted, those symptoms suggested heart failure.  Evidently she was fine up until then, and she lived a full long and healthy life, and there was really nothing you could do to prolong her life at that point.  We have a Forum here called Crossing the Bridge where you can write a memorial for her and post pictures if you like and share with other members who have lost furbabies recently. We are so sorry for your sudden unexpected loss.

Oh behalf of the TCS Team, we offer our deepest sympathy on the loss of your sweet kitty.  We will close the thread now out of respect for your loss, and invite you to post a tribute to your kitty in our Crossing the Bridge forum.
