We have a few young adult cats and a litter of 5 kittens(3 girls, 2 boys).  The  kittens will be getting their 3-way tomorrow and had planned on doing surgeries the  week of June 13th(or sooner).  They'll be 16  weeks on June 25th.

13 weeks this Sat.

Don't want any more unplanned kittens and are committed to the care/homing of these.

Our Vet suggested today to wait 4 weeks after the vax to do surgeries...but that would make them almost 17 weeks or a little over depending on the vet schedule...

so now  am unsure.

Couldn't they go into heat if I wait that long?

Yeah that's too late if you have mixed genders. Also, they'd be due for another vaccine booster at that time so I'm not sure what he's trying for? Waiting a week is fine, 2 weeks would be great. Some vets do vaccines and spay/neuters at the same time even.

Ok.  So would June 20th sound safe, two weeks after shots?  They will be 15 weeks and 2 days old.

Making calls to vets today to compare a few.  BUT I may just take the two adult boys in As soon as I can get an appt.  Wonder  if that would help...

It might be worth chatting to your vet about taking your two adult males in as you suggest above @Fluffy Kitty  but also the 2 male kittens. They might be happier completing the less invasive surgery for the male kittens and all male cats being neutered would certainly offer more protection to the little girls.

For consideration in terms of surgery and vaccinations:  Mouse's vet completed his neuter surgery mid way between his vaccinations rather than wait until afterwards, so he was about 11 or 12 weeks.

I would actually get the girls done first since the boys are still fertile for up to a month after their procedure. I don't think the two-week window after the vaccine is necessary. I would go ahead and book the surgeries.

Thank you so much!

Just got more complicated after talking to the two vets.  To have the spay, pre-op catheter IV and blood work is $430 with one and $304 with the other.

Will not get the IV and blood tests for the boys, but thinking about it for the 3 girl kittens and their mom. Or maybe skip the blood tests for the 3 kittens.

The more expensive vet does JUST the spay, no blood tests or catheter for $260 and the other does JUST the spay for $100.

The difference in fees is due to one vet having more modern equipment I believe, after looking at their website.   Also the cheaper one only does 2 operations a day.  Would it be worth it to pay more?

Spays are pretty basic. If you think the cheaper vet is good enough, go ahead and save a few bucks. I've never had bloodwork done, my vet doesn't even offer it for routine stuff. I've never had any trouble with spays/neuters.

I agree. I was also going to say do the girls first for the same reason.
