I tried making a couple of slow cooker's worth of pulled pork the other day and it turned out delicious, but not "pulled". I guess I used the wrong cut of meat? It was a loin roast type of cut I think, not the little tenderloin but a big 1kg hunk of meat. When it was done I had to cut it all up into little pieces for the tortillas we had instead of it pulling apart nicely.

Can anybody tell me what cut of meat you're supposed to use?

I use a pork shoulder/Boston butt cut when I do it on the grill. It takes a good five hours on the grill. Have you tried my recipe for crock pot pulled pork? I really like using a pork shoulder type cut. Even when you're using a crock pot, you need to make sure that the pork is really done.....it has to be really done to pull well. Use nothing less than 3 pounds in the crock pot for the best results. That's just my two cents.

Crock Pot Pulled Pork Sandwiches  - makes 10 generous servings

2-1/2 to 3 lb. pork sirloin roast or boneless pork shoulder roast
3 Tbsp. cider vinegar
2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. ground cumin OR chili powder
1/2 cup water
Homemade BBQ sauce (below) OR 3-1/2 cups of your favorite BBQ sauce
Hamburger buns

Trim fat from pork roast. Cut roast, if necessary, to fit into a 3-1/2 to 4 quart crock pot. Season meat with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and cumin or chili powder. Pour over meat in crock pot. Cover and cook on Low heat 8 to 10 hours or on High heat 4 to 5 hours. Remove meat and discard the cooking liquid.

Using two forks, shred the meat and return the meat to the crock pot. Stir in 2 cups of the BBQ sauce. Cover and cook on High heat 30 to 45 minutes or until heated through.

Serve the meat in split hamburger rolls. Pass the remaining BBQ sauce.

Homemade BBQ Sauce:

2-1/2 cups ketchup
1 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 Tbsp. bottled Pickapeppa Sauce or Worcestershire sauce
3 Tbsp. cider vinegar
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 tsp. hot pepper sauce

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Use immediately or let it cool. Chill up to 3 days. Makes 3-1/2 cups of sauce.

Note:  I use cumin instead of the chili powder. You will need a really good BBQ sauce for the pork. Use a sauce that you really like. I also like to add just a wee bit of Liquid Smoke to the mix, too.

This is a good (and easy) recipe for when you either don't feel like messing around with your grill or it's too cold to grill outside, but you want pulled pork. Slathered with your favorite sauce and with some cole slaw, it's good stuff!

I loooove making pulled pork in the crock pot.  I trim the roast up as good as i can since no one likes a bite of fat.  And with slow cooking you don't need the juices like that.  The recipe I use is from Betty Crocker's website and calls for a can of coke and Jamaican jerk seasoning.  I use Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce at the end.  it's SO good!  I plan to make some soon.  I'm not a porkchop/porkloin fan.  I think the cut has a different taste to it.

I also cook it in the crock pot.  I usually will season it first, then apply some BBQ sauce.  Let it go on the longest/slowest setting to make sure it's tender.  Once done, I put more sauce on it and throw it under the broiler to get a bit of a char on the top.  Made some last weekend - used Stubbs sauce which is one of my favorites.

FYI, I used to start it in the over for an hour or so wrapped in foil but I don't see the difference between the 2 methods and since I'm lazy just throwing into the crock pot works out fine.  Not as good as smoking but really good anyway.

I use pork loin or pork roast and often cook it in a roaster oven (or the regular oven with some water in the bottom of the pan for steam).  I wait until it cools a bit and then pull it apart with a fork.  It comes out very tender.  I've also made it in the crock pot with a Coke recipe and it was so good.

Thanks for the replies! I suspected I need to try different cut next time. The meat is still delicious, and will serve for quite a few more meals as I've frozen some.
Thanks for that recipe Winchester Winchester I'll give it a go next time!
