An article on whisker fatigue popped up on my Facebook news feed. My first thought was "oh great -- not only do I have to be concerned with what kind of food I am feeding them -- now I have to be concerned what kind of dish it goes in too??" I do ceramic bowls because I know plastic isn't great but my older guy likes to eat from a pile on the placemat, and my other boy is doing that as well now. So I took the shallow bowl I normally put their overnight kibble in away and just put it on a plate. Their wet food now goes on a saucer instead of the little bowls I normally use.
Is whisker fatigue really a thing? Has anyone noticed an improvement in eating after switching out dishes?

Yes. We have that who eats much from completely flat plates or very "open" dishes. I'm not sure if it's whisker stress or something else but there's a definite difference.

My cat loves her food very much so a dish has never stopped her, but she definitely eats more slowly when it's in a bowl with high sides, so I think the low sides at least make it easier.

I've never heard of whisker fatigue. Sounds like something someone dreamed up to get some ads to pay in to it. I feed Mingo his kibble in a ceramic bowl with sides about an inch high, but I put his wet food on a flat plate because he can't get to it easily in the bowl. He wouldn't eat all of it because it piled up near the sides and he couldn't reach it.

Here's the article on whisker fatigue. Some good points in there but I experimented tonight with their wet food on a saucer and the other portion in their usual cat bowl. Augusta (my 16 year old) went for the small cat bowl; Merlin (my 5 year old) went for the saucer. I'm going to continue with the experiment and see if it makes that much of a difference.

My male kitty never eats enough food (or didn't) and when I read this I switched straight away from bowls to flatter dishes. Now he knocks a fair bit of it on the floor but he definitely eats more. I still put their dry food in bowls though or I spend my entire life sweeping dry food from all around the house.
