Is my cat sick, stressed or just sleepy?

Hi guys! I have a 1yo male cat  named Oliver who has been is weird kind of funk. I understand that cats tend to "slow down" around this age, but he has literally been sleeping all day for a few days now. One of my roommates has recently gotten a new kitten, and there has been a lot of change in our apartment recently. However, Oliver is very adaptable and has traveled with me to visit my parents house and stayed there and did fine and got used to things quickly. He's been introduced to cats before and he's not mean, just seems kind of annoyed by the new guy until he gets used to it.

So, long story short, there has been a lot of change and my cat has been acting a little weird, even though he typically handles change well. He's been eating and drinking normally, but he just seems kind of apathetic. Do you think this is possibly an illness or stress? If so, is there anything I should do?

Thanks!

What kind of interactions are your cat and the new kitten having?  And how soon after the kitten arrived did your cat start sleeping excessively?  You might try playing with him with a wand toy like Da Bird.  Most cats find that very hard to resist.  If you can't get him to play at all and he continues to sleep so much more than a couple more days, I'd take him to the vet.  A one year old cat should still be very active.

He's just been watching the new kitty, and swatting at her if she gets to close haha. I got him to play last night for awhile and he seems alert when he is awake, but he is still sleeping a lot. Does weather have anything to do with it? Its been rainy and gloomy here for a couple of days.

My one-year-old also went sort of low-energy that I finally chalked up to a stressor in her life:  .  She was sleeping more than normal, not playing as energetically as normal and her eating did change.    She was leaving more and more food i her dish as the weeks went on.  Her one-year vet check/bloodwork were normal.  Things turned around almost instantly when I switched her dishes to flat plates.  She was experiencing "whisker fatigue", wasn't enjoying food as much, and since she wasn't eating enough her energy was low.

If your cat's health is good, it could be that he is experiencing some kind of stress.  It does sound reasonable that it is the new kitten.  Even though your cat is pretty adaptable, there just might be too much commotion for him right now.  I agree with Margd - play with him, shower him with love and attention and get him checked by the vet if this keeps up.

That's an interesting question about the weather.  I know multiple gloomy days in a row can make me feel less energetic so it wouldn't surprise me if it happened to cats as well.  I've never noticed it with mine before, though.  The fact that he's playing is a good sign - I'd keep that up.  If he is feeling insecure because of the new kitten, playing with you will make him feel more connected with you and reassure him of his importance.

Thanks so much for all of your help. He still seems a little moody but I've been playing with him a lot. he's still sleeping a lot but he's also been playing with the new kitten a little too. I'm guessing he's just a bit stressed but he seems to be doing better! Thanks again, I get so worried about my fur baby haha

What good news!  Hopefully Oliver will start enjoying having the kitten around.  I know what you mean about worrying - I do the same.
Thanks for letting us know he's doing better!
