F flojo75 Nerves with a new cat are normal - for both cat and mom (or dad ;) ). I'm sure everything will be just fine, and Shadow will be happily settled with you in no time. The important thing, especially at first, is to let him come to you, and give him space if that's what he needs. These articles should give you some pointers for a smooth transition (hopefully the last one won't be needed :cross: ):-[article="32804"][/article][article="30316"][/article][article="32735"][/article]

Thanks columbine & everyone for putting my mind st rest. I've bought him a covered cat bed for him to hide in initially if he's scared & his cat tree is a bit daunting to start with.
I've had a lot of dogs & ive always let them explore their new home in their own time. I'm just going to leave him alone until he feel confident enough to come to me.

Well I'm all set for shadow arriving tomorrow, just put up his cat tree. This might sound like a stupid question but remember I'm a novice, I've put his litter in the kitchen about 8ft away from his food under a kitchen unit that gives him some privacy. In order to do this I've had to move my bin & it's now close to his food bowls, will this bother him?? I know it's a totally stupid question!!!!

First of all....there are no stupid questions!! I wouldn't think that would bother him but a lot of things will be trial and error for the two of you in the beginning. Every kitty is different in their preferences so don't feel badly if your intial set up of anything needs to be tweaked.

Shadows tree is amazing...nice job!!!

Not too much longer and your boy will be home [emoji]128571[/emoji][emoji]128571[/emoji]

No question is silly, if there was a prize for asking silly questions I'd win hands down [emoji]128521[/emoji] I feed Martha in my bedroom which is her bedroom too as she has access to every room in my flat as my home is her hime. Anyway I feed in my bedroom as someone wise told me she will be comfortable eating in their as it has my scent and her scent jn the room and it worked. But obviously everyone and every cat is different, see how you go, if shadow stops eating his food their you can always place his food elsewhere. Martha loves her cat tree , she even sleeps on it. Awe thanks everyone, I'm just trying to get everything right but as you all say it's a case of shadow letting me what he likes & doesn't like. He'll teach me I think!!!!

Martha has taught me lots ever since the first day I got her, shes taught me patience and that you should never give up. She would cower whenever I went near her at first but now we are the best of friends and she dos just as much for me as I do for her. So enjoy the journey and adventure with your new feline friend. He will teach you about what he likes and dislikes. He sounds like a laid back little guy. He will give you so much love and companionship [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Can't wait for your boy to finally be home!!!!

Thanks hellomisskitty, I can't wait, I've sprayed his cat tree with catnip so he should go mad for it!! He'll be arriving between 1.30-2pm tomorrow so I'll have most of the afternoon & night with him to let him settle. He's got an hour & 20 mins journey so I bet he'll be glad to stretch his legs!!

Excellent idea about spraying the tree with catnip! Shadow is one lucky little guy to have someone who cares so much for him already [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

How often would you folks change the litter, I know you have to clear any wee & pooh everyday but how long would you leave it before you do a full clean??

I check her litter tray every day and scoop out whatever she's done in her tray, once every 4 days I completely empty her tray , wash it with hot soapy water and then refill with new litter.

It totally depends on the type of litter you use. We scoop each day and then do a full clean of the box when the litter starts getting too yucky. We were using Worlds Best Cat Litter and we are changing it out tomorrow, have been using it for about four weeks I think. I just play it by ear.

I think you'll find that @lovefive  is not alone in cleaning out the cat box entirely every few days.  I have to admit I don't replace the litter and wash the box that frequently, however.  I vary from once a week to once every two weeks.  The main thing is to stay on top of the scooping.

I am eager to see photos of Shadow when he comes to his new home at all!

You should be able to tell when its time to clean it out. The litter starts getting a little bit clumpy and doesn't smell so nice anymore. It really depends a lot on the cat and your own preference to some extent. Some cats smell worse, have worse litter box habits, or things like that change how long it may take.
