I'm a disabled retired musician living in beautiful northern California. A few months ago a care giver came over with a little cat in a cat carrier. She said she was taking it to the shelter. The moment My grand daughter looked in the box SHE began begging for me to take the cat. We had recently lost our other cat OG after he was hit by a car out front. Leaving his brother Peak all alone. Finally, after some convincing I relented and agreed we could take him in. I WAS told he'd been adopted by a lady from the Shelter & loved deeply by his previous owner. Yet when I got him he hadn't even been fixed yet plus, he was so thin and completely covered in fleas. I opened up the carrier and to get him out and when I went to touch him he flinched away from my touch. I knew at that moment this poor, skinny, flea ridden, cat had been abused. I didn't say a word about it. I called and made an immediate appointment to get him fixed, worked and de-fleaed. He's the sweetest cat loving nothing more than sleeping on my lap. The problem is his funny way of walking. Both his hind legs swing as though his hips are stiff and disconnected from the rest of him. It's as though he's out of place or something. Do some cats just walk funny? Oh, Plus he's never purred. This is my reason for joining.

I've seen cats walk in different ways, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one walk the way you describe.  Could you post a video of him walking?  Actually given that you suspect he'd been previously abused, I'd wonder if maybe this was a result of that abuse.  Can you take him to the vet for x-rays?

As for purring - some cats don't purr, or purr very softly.  The only way I know when my Paul is purring is by touching his throat and feeling the vibrations.  Chula, Paul's sister, has never purred as far as I know, but she's very affectionate and happy so I don't worry about it.  Other people have posted about this as well so I wouldn't worry about it.  One thing I have read is that some cats do eventually purr, sometimes several years after joining the family.

Welcome to TCS, btw.
I think it's great you took this poor little guy in and gave him a good home.   It was his lucky day when he met you!
 What is his name?

I had a cat that couldn't purr before, you could barely feel her purring. But she was so small when I got her that her eyes had barely opened. Supposedly abandonded by mother... My last cat couldn't meow.... another rescue from brink of death. He could vocalize but not meow. He did try, just nothing but a squeek. If cat is happy, then i would not worry about the purring.
