Does anyone have any idea where I could find this?

I don't know if it matters, i am using U40 syringes and ProZinc Insulin.

I am starting to check my little boy's glucose myself because he's had two seizures I believe are diabetic in nature (but he is also epileptic).

I can check his blood, but I need  a conversion chart so I know what dose to give him based on his weight and glucose count.

any help?

Prozinc is a U40 insulin so you use U40 insulin syringes. No dose conversion is needed at all unless you are using U100 insulin syringes.

Insulin doses in cats are not based on weight. They are based more on how the current dose is working on the blood glucose levels. Here is the ProZinc protocol that the FDMB board recommends: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/protocol-for-prozinc-pzi.109077/ You may want to post over on the FDMB for more detailed help and tips

Hi there,

yes when the vet switched me, i had to toss out all the u100 needles (well they told me to, i didn't know i could convert) an d now only use u40

but what i meant was a chart to know how much insulin to give him.

I can't help but think he's getting way too much. but i was giving him 9 units in the am and 9 in the pm. he had two seziures 3 weeks ago, then a gain a couple days ago.

3 hours after I gave him his 9u his blood sugar was at 350. i left him there for 2 hours and they tested again. same result. so they had me raise it to 10u twice daily.

that sounds to me like an enormous amount of insulin, doesn' it?

By the way, thank you so much for the reply

I have to say this: We are not Vets. I strongly feel you should discuss the doses with your Vet. This is dangerous stuff you are playing with.

Please, even contact an E-Vet for some advice. We do not know your cat or what his level is normally at.

There is a way to use U100 insulin syringes with U40 insulin. There's a chart over on the FelineDiabetes.com board. Some people prefer to use U100 insulin syringes because they can do micro-dosing.

9 units BID???
That is  HUGE amount of insulin. Vet office blood glucose curves aren't very reliable because many diabetic cats are soooo stressed out that their blood glucose levels stay really really high. If you do a curve at home, the results will be much more accurate and reflect how your cat is in a familiar stress free environment. 9 units may not show blood glucose levels budging at the vet's office but at home the same 9 units may be dropping your cat well under 100 mg/dl.

Please post for advice on the FelineDiabetes.com message board. The advice you get there does not replace the advice you get from the vet but you can use the information to further discuss your cat's diabetes and management with the vet to come up with a treatment that works best for your cat's needs. The members there can even suggest a local vet who is more experienced with feline diabetes as there are members from all over the US and world there.

What are you feeding your cat? Dry food, even the prescription stuff, keeps blood glucose levels too high and more insulin is typically needed to work on lowering blood glucose levels. There's nothing in prescription food that works for diabetes. It's basically the cat equivalent of sugary junk food. The right diet is low carb canned food aka "Catkins diet", not too much different from the diet of many Human diabetics.

Don't do anything with the current insulin dose or diet yet until you have gotten some advice from experienced members from FDMB and have discussed with your vet.

yeah it's scary. i think he's sneaking in to get Tinker's food. she eats regular cat food.

I'll tell you what I did, i ordered a glucose testing kig today. i used to test myself because until i got healthy again i was Type II diabetic. i know how to test. So i'm going to force wilbur to learn to let me take blood from his ear. once I can test him, I've got a recipe for making cat food myself with chicken and supposedly it's very healthy and better than anything you can buy. it's supposed to be perfect for diabetic cats. but I don't wnt to try that until i can safely test him myself.

I would bet this will lower his insulin need a lot. Not to mention with self testing I can do glucose curves myself.

Home blood glucose testing is very important
I'm glad you will start testing your cat. It may take a bit of time for your cat to get used to being tested. Just be patient and offer low carb treats like freeze dried meat treats as a reward.

Homemade raw or cooked food can be great for diabetics
Definitely don't change the diet until you have the insulin and dose figured out with the vet. A diet change may seem like nothing but can have a big impact on the blood glucose levels.

Can you change Tinker's food to something low carb that won't affect the diabetic cat if he gets into it? Low carb canned food is most ideal but if Tinker won't eat canned, then try a grain free dry food and don't leave the bowl out all day if you can. There is a brand called Young Again that is supposedly zero carb and suitable for diabetics but that has been debated many times on the FDMB board.

ProZinc is a great insulin but some cats may not respond to it very well. It's worth discussing other insulins with your vet. Lantus is the insulin of choice for diabetic cats these days and Levemir is a close second. You can find out more about the different types of insulins used for cats on the FDMB board.
