Hello everyone.  I recently adopted a 4 week old kitten from a local shelter.  He ate some Science Diet kitten food the first day he was here, but today he's been throwing it up shortly after he eats.  He's also sleeping alot.  He really just wants to sit in my lap and sleep.  He does play a little bit and seems very curious about his surroundings.   Today I went and bought some kitten formula and got him to eat just a very small amount of that.  He's been having diarrhea today as well, and I have no clue what to do.  I took him straight to my vet from the shelter, and he's negative for everything and has had some vaccinations since he was at a shelter.  My vet said he looked fine on Thursday.  Am I overreacting?  He was so terrified when I first brought him home, hissing and spitting at me, but now he's the sweetest little cuddly baby!  Any and all advice welcomed!

Assuming you made a typo mistake for the age? Kittens stay with mom cat nursing until minimum 8 weeks. A 4 week old kitten is not fully weaned yet, is drinking mom's milk or formula. Do you have any pictures you can share?  What did the Vet suggest to feed him?

Whatever the age you've come to the right site to get any info to keep this little one going

*do not feed regular milk or cream - diarrhea, vomiting is loss of fluids it can become dangerous in a short amount of time for a young kitten.

He is 4 weeks old.  I'm not sure how he came to be at the shelter, but he was alone.  I think someone found him and took him to the animal shelter, who then sent out an email to all their pet rescue agencies.  A friend happens to be on the board of one, and knew I was looking for a kitten and asked me if I would go and get him.  He would have died for sure had he been left.  At any rate, that is his age...he weighs about 1.4 lbs.  The shelter said they were feeding him Science Diet kitten food, and my vet seemed to think this was fine as well....so that is what I got for him, however he has thrown the wet food up twice today, so I got him some KMR and he seems to be keeping that down ok.  He just won't eat very much of it.  I'll post a picture of him...he's an absolute doll.

Oh he's a gorgeous little Seal point!
you've got good support with the rescue.

He's healthy or they wouldn't have released him.  So young surprised they didn't try to

foster with another mom until older unless they couldn't...Just watch

for dehydration by pinching the back of the neck 'tent test' you can make home

made pedialyte when necessary.

Congrats on your new baby

*Royal Canin moist kitten food is very good me personally

I would wait a few weeks longer...

I presume the shelter has no resources for fostering small kittens.  Or all their fosterers were busy.  So in effect, YOU become de facto their fosterer...

KMR in powder is good.  Another alternative is full fat goat milk.  (ie about 3%).

IF you begin with dry foods, Royal canines  dry for mommas and babies is good.  - I dont remember the exact name, its not the same as is labelled for kittens.

Yeah, and the pedialyte is good.  Do it.

If bought, buy baby flavorless pedialyte.

Otherwise, its not difficult to make a home made pedialyte.  Use for example minerale water and have some glucose sugar (honey for example) in it.

I think its in Health forum, an article about common problems cats taken if from shelters may have.  This is mainly because of stress and change of milieu.

Still, with such a little one you must keep a sharp eye - if unlucky he may go downhill pretty fast.

He is a nice3 look alike of an oldt type siamese - called for Thai nowadays.

I would keep him on kitten formula for awhile. I'd offer him a bottle four times a day, along with kitten chow and Fancy Feast wet kitten food. It sounds to me like he does not like the Science Diet food.

If the diarrhea continues, he may need an antibiotic for intestinal bacteria, which may not show up in a regular fecal. You may want to mix the formula with clear pedialyte for hydration if the diarrhea continues.

He's absolutely adorable. Keep us posted!

We saw the vet this morning.  I just wasn't taking any chances with this little guy.  Since they didn't immediately see anything wrong with him, he decided to just treat his symptoms and see how he did.  We got home, and he was starving...trying to eat the dog's food!  The vet recommended the science diet wet since that's about all he seems to like, and told me to stick with just that.  He has been eating and eating and eating today!  No vomiting!  The vet said diarrhea for a couple of days is ok, but any more vomiting and bring him back immediately.  So far, he's kept down all the wet food he's eaten today.  He's sleeping a ton, but now is running around my feet playing.  Yay!
