Hello all experienced cat owners, we're wondering if you can give us (first-time cat owners) some advice. Oscar, our five-month old lynx-point Siamese, vomited early this morning around three or four times. He hadn't had his breakfast before this, and it happened several hours before we normally feed him. We're concerned because for the past couple of weeks he's also had a couple of cases where he's had a soft, wet stool (we know this because it's been apt to get in his fur and follow him out of the litterbox, if you know what I mean.) We're worried that he has a stomach bug or a worse problem.

The good news is that in the intervening hours, our kitten's been quite normal - alert, active, and his usual bratty Meezer self. We've held off from feeding him until tonight in the hopes it can allow his stomach to calm down, but we've been letting him drink enough to stay hydrated.

I know the best response would be to see a vet, and we definitely will if we get the sense that this is an emergency, but the reality is that our funds have recently run low due to life circumstances, and we're worried about spending to see a vet for a non-emergency when a real emergency could follow (added to the fact that we'll be have to get Oscar neutered fairly soon.)

So my question to all you experienced cat owners is this: is vomiting + soft stool relatively 'normal' in your experience? By normal, I mean is it likely that Oscar is dealing with something which isn't a huge cause for concern? Or is this a sign of a big problem? Your responses, obviously coupled with our continued eye on Oscar's condition, will help determine whether we're off the to vet tomorrow (our local vet is closed for Sunday today), or whether we just keep a close eye on him for now.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Hi

Its hard to give you a good answer but here are some thoughts.  Sometimes cats vomit before a meal if they're really hungry.  They're ready for the meal, but the food isn't there and their stomachs start to secret acid in anticipation of the meal, then because they have no food they throw up.

What are you feeding, and how often?

How long had it been since his last meal?

Did he throw up bile, liquid or foamy liquid?

One episode of throwing up (4 times in a row being one episode) isn't an emergency but if it recurs then you need to address it, either via diet or a vet visit.  A cat who is regularly throwing up bile can also get a really sour stomach that makes it worse and vets often direct patients to take 1/4 tab of a 10mg pepcid but you should talk to you vet before doing this.

The loose stool may or may not be related.

Vomiting and soft stools is not normal.  It happens, but it shouldn't persist for more than a day.
