So my cats usually eat Nutrisca dry food as approximately half of the food they eat in a day (the rest is a canned food rotation of Fancy Feast, Sheba, Nutro, Weruva, and Wellness).

In the last year, they've raised the price on this food making it about 35 dollars for a 13 pound bag.

Since the price went up so much, I have been considering finding some better type of cat food since I'll be paying so much anyhow.  I figure that now for just ten or fifteen dollars more I could get them healthier food without it being a big problem for my budget.

I am considering trying out ACANA cat food, but I've never heard anything from anyone here about using it.

Here are the ingredients in Nutrisca:

Chicken, Chicken Meal, Peas, Turkey Meal, Chickpeas, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Flavor, Pea Protein, Tomato Pomace, Sunflower Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, DL Methionine, Cranberries, Blueberries, Apples, Taurine, Carrots, Celery, Parsley, Lettuce, Watercress, Spinach, Beets, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Sulfate, Niacin, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin A Actetate, Manganese Proteinate, Iodine Iodate, Folic Acide, Cobalt Proteinate, Selenium Selenite, Biotin, Cobalt Carbonate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Rosemary Extract

And the ingredients in ACANA:

Deboned chicken, deboned turkey, chicken giblets (liver, heart, kidney), chicken meal, catfish meal, turkey giblets (liver, heart, kidney), whole green peas, red lentils, pinto beans, pollock meal, chicken fat, chickpeas, green lentils, whole yellow peas, catfish, whole eggs, rainbow trout, herring oil, chicken liver, sun-cured alfalfa, natural chicken flavor, chicken cartilage, turkey cartilage, dried kelp, whole pumpkin, whole butternut squash, kale, spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, carrots, apples, pears, freeze-dried chicken liver, freeze-dried turkey liver, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, choline chloride, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, mixed tocopherols (preservative), chicory root, turmeric, sarsaparilla root, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries, dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried bifidobacterium animalis fermentation product, dried lactobacillus casei fermentation product

One concern I have on ACANA is the addition of a lot of fish ingredients (this is in their new formula). My problem with Nutrisca is fillers high up on the ingredient list such as peas and chickpeas.

I've also considered Orijen, but it also has a lot of fish ingredients in it and obviously it is fairly expensive.

What are your thoughts on the ACANA? Are there other high quality dry foods that you would recommend in the ~45-50 dollar per 12 pound bag price range?

Acana is supposed to be a good brand. My cat has been eating Acana and Orijen for about two years. That Acana Meadowland is the new USA made. The Canadian made is Wild Prairie. My cat will not eat the USA made Meadowland or USA Grasslands. They are inferior to the Canadian made IMO. Plus, they make my cat literally barfing sick. Pinto beans, inferior fish, goat are just some of the new ingredients. It sucks now. If you can get the Canadian made then do that!! Petflow says they will carry the Canadian made in their stock. Unlike other pet food online suppliers, they actually drive their own trucks into Canada and get Canadian products. Champion Pet Foods says they will no longer ship Acana Canadian made to the USA and we are stuck with the crappy USA made. If you order from Petflow please thank them for carrying the Canadian made Acana and Orijen and encourage them to keep doing so!
Natures Variety Instinct is a very good brand and so is Go! cat food. These are now superior to USA made Acana IMO. Orijen is being made right now in the Kentucky facility and will be in stores soon.

You have no idea how happy this post made me! I was upset that I couldn't find the Canadian kind and that the formulas were switching. Chewy still has it for now... but I didn't really want to switch my cats if it wasn't available anymore. I will definitely order from Petflow if I decide to make the switch. So happy that you were able to explain the difference.

I dont like how much fillers they put in it.

orijen was too rich for my girls-if you do try it I would suggest 50/50 otherwise it may cause constipation. I tried several times to switch them to orijin and it was too rich for my old girl. she cant eat rich protein foods for some reason it makes her vomit and get constipated.

orijin has some great freeze dried treats that my other girls love. Wellness dry also has higher calorie content but again too rich for my girls. I never could figure that out.

This Acana sounds interesting since it already has pumpkin and squash in it-we may try this one-I would also like to get them on a better quality dry food but its so hard with an elderly kitty's sensitive tummy. I hate to rock the boat now that I got her on 50% wet food after 14 years of fighting with her to eat wet to begin with.

right now we feed tractor supply but I don't like the potatoes in it but for some reason its the only thing she isn't barfing.

I have heard that FROMM is another really good one..

Also thank you for sharing this info about pet food-I wonder if that place in Kentucky is actually using high quality ingredients or do they just say they do. Canada has better quality food in my opinion. I only hope they dont turn into a company like Purina and all the other big sellers who went big wig with cheap fillers.

also check out the site truth about pet food for more ideas of foods to try-I read this site back in 2011 and since have been more aware of ingredients and not necessarily the ingredients themselves but how they prepare and what quality control methods they use to ensure our pets get top shelf product.

My biggest fear is Champion Pet Foods somehow blocking Petflow from getting the Canadian made Acana and Orijen. They so desperately want to force USA customers to buy the Kentucky made only. I guess they have to pay for that $85,000,000 new facility somehow. They showed some pictures on their Facebook of food on the conveyer belt for their new Heritage dog food. It showed a lot of greens and some peeled apples. You should have seen all the complaints from doggy parents because the apples still had the cores with seeds. That got deleted. I guess that is poison? If you spend anytime on their Facebook, you will see complaints, but they get removed quickly and people get banned.
Keep in mind that the Canadian made will have a few changes this year too. Like instead of salmon it will be salmon meal. Nothing drastic. It seems they are downgrading their food IMO. Cutting corners and making $$$ on their past reputation and hoping we don't notice.

It is so important to thank Petflow for keeping the CANADIAN made and encourage them to keep it in stock.

I didnt know that. does the acana actually say made in Canada? I wonder if we buy on ebay? I know a few people in Canada on my friends list on FB-I am sure we can figure something out. I buy stuff from them all the time.

like Merrick is now owned by Nestle/Purina-they swear up and down that they dont change anything. But one of the cat food kibble has cellolose which is basicly wood shavings. Why would they put wood shavings into pet food? and most pet centers that make the food is not fit for human consumption. I am seriously considering following that FB raw feeding and trying rad cat to feed. I think we will see less kidney and cancer with getting away from mass produced food. but sometimes thats all you can feed especially if you dont have the time or money to buy better. I still think feeding fancy feast is better than kibble. For my furry horde they wont eat much else. I have to give the raw a try-I figure if its good enough for me to eat=chicken etc then its good enough for them. I laugh when people say table scraps are dangerous for pets=yes if its onion garlic grapes raisins etc but the table food has better quality than the other stuff-at least in my eyes.

I use Acana for my cat, and he's doing well on it. :) I'm in Canada though, so I just use the Grasslands formula.

I also have been thinking about trying Go! Fit + Free cat food, but I haven't had a chance yet.

Yes, the bags will say made in Canada or made in USA. Petflow distinguishes between with an icon.

My cat loves the Go! Dry Chicken, turkey and duck. Also likes the Go! Chicken Stew canned. No carrageenan. It is a great ingredient food dry and canned. Made in superior Canada!

You can personally cross the border and bring back 50 lbs of pet food from Canada. You personally cannot bring back anything with sheep or lamb in the ingredients though. Retailers can bring in lamb/sheep with special license. I called border patrol in Washington state to confirm. I have no idea about mailing from Canada. Ebayers who live close to the border can make some steady $$$ and regular customers if they figure that out!

One of Champions arguments about not shipping to the US is that they have trouble crossing the border with inspections. That is absolute bull! When asked details they admitted it was AFFCO that was giving them problems. AFFCO doesn't inspect and has nothing to do with the border!!! They were lying and trying to make it sound like AFFCO was some federal agency giving them trouble at the border. This was on their Facebook a few months ago over the weekend with a lot of pissed off customers arguing with some flunky from Champion Pet Foods weekend monitor. That post was deleted and people were banned come Monday!

Chewy does sell Orijen. Acording to the description, it is Canadian.

All online pet food retailers sell the Canadian Orijen NOW until they start shipping it out from the Kentucky plant. Then retailers will have no choice but buy the USA made for their stock....except for Petflow. Just like they are experiencing now with Acana.

Chewy is already switching their ACANA over to the US made type.

Young Again appears to be far out of my price range. Also I cannot find it anywhere... So that won't work too well. Go! seems to have similar formula to ACANA. Also lots of fish in it.

I have thought about just combining Orjen 50/50 with the food I normally use, just because I do worry about it being too rich (and too expensive to buy lots of.

The ACANA from Canada is definitely superior to that from the US, just reading the reviews can show you this.

I believe Young Again is only available through their own website (http://www.youngagainpetfood.com/cat-food.html).  Young Again is also higher in calories, so you would feed slightly less of it than you would ACANA or Orijen... but I believe it still comes out to be more expensive.  Haven't sat down to do the math yet.

Have you considered Nature's Variety Instinct Ultimate Protein?  The price is very reasonable when it is on sale and you use a manufacturer's coupon (http://www.naturesvariety.com/tryit).  I consider it to be comparable to Orijen.

Well, I just had an alarming online conversation with Petflow at their site. I was asking about Orijen and if they would supply the Canadian made.
This online chat lady said no. I asked about Acana and she said they would not be carrying the Canadian version either!!

Something is wrong. I plan on contacting headquarters in New York tomorrow. Before, I was told by 3 people by phone that said they would.

That's terrible. Hopefully that person just doesn't know what she is talking about.
