My cat had her 1st visit to the vet May 16th  because she wasnt eating , losing alot of weight and we could feel a lump near her abdomen .

They told us it was cancer and to bring her back on friday so they could operate and that we should prepare for the worst ,

bought her back Friday 20th may .  They did some xrays on her and said it was 1 of her kidneys that was filled with liquid , and they drained 40mls   and told us to bring her back 1 week later for her follow up . They sent some of her kidney tissues off for testing to see if there were any cancer cells but those results wont be back for 2 weeks

She seemed alot better when she came home that night , she was eating again like normal and was running around happily in the garden .

From Monday 23rd - Tuesday  i noticed she wasnt eating again , she had her follow up Friday and yesterday more fluid had built up again , they drained another 25mls from her and said she has a cyst on 1 of her kidneys .

we ( me and my auntie ) have to bring her back on Thursday 2nd June , if no cancerous cells are found then they said they could consider surgery to remove the 1 abnormal kidney which has the cyst's

My question is

Has anyone body here any gone through something like this and has their cat had the 1 abnormal kidney removed and able to live happy and normal on just a single kidney .   i could possibly lose her this thursday during surgery , ive been crying non stop since last night . I feel like my world is ending , help me please

I personally haven't had this done but I do know that they are now doing kidney transplants on kitties.  They use a kitty from a shelter for the donation and the recipient kitties owner agrees to adopt the donor kitty.  That would actually be two kitties each having one good kidney.

I hope things work out for your kitty.

I'm on a FB group for cats with CKD where someone just the other day posted about their young cat (by young, I mean not typical age for CKD, but will try to go back and find the post) that was diagnosed with kidney disease, then ended up needing the kidney removed because there was basically a hole in it (sounded like a birth defect). And the kitty has been doing much better, but they still need to be on the alert with her. Her values are much better now though.

Edit: Looks like he was an owner surrender that she adopted and she didn't mention an exact age. His creatinine is at 2 now, which is still considered high, but it's amazing how perspective can make you say "that's not that high at all" like this person did. And me too! :) And he's on a kidney diet to help keep the other kidney from being stressed out too much (not sure if it's 100% or in part kidney diet).

Anyway, yes, short answer, your cat can have a good life with one kidney. I don't know how long a cat with one kidney lives, if it's the same as the average cat - although barring kidney disease in the remaining kidney, I don't see why not - but it's always about quality of life. And if removing the kidney will vastly improve her quality of life, by all means, remove it.

I will think LOTS of good thoughts for your kitty and send lots of good vibes :vibes: to both of you that it's not cancer.

Thank you for the reply

that makes me feel better reading that , i truly think my cat might be doomed and have to be put down . The vet said they dont think she can survive on 1 kidney and there's a possibility of bleeding from the major kidney vessels during the operation . Also they said she's not showing any signs of kidney disease but its a possibility after removing the cyst kidney the normal one might develop kidney insufficiency or failure down the line .   and they said if they open her up and the kidney cant be removed or the cysts have spread to other organs its best to put her down

This is the worst thing ever ive gone through , shes my baby ,  my world , my whole life  .

Thank you again for the detailed reply , what was the name of that FB Group please

Just sent you a PM.

If the cysts have spread, that's a whole other story. And of course there is a chance of renal issues down the line. There's a chance whether the cat has only one or both kidneys. Is there a reason the vet doesn't feel she can survive on one kidney? Is there something wrong with the other one?
