Hello! I adopted a new kitten who is currently still at the fosters with mom. Hes 5 weeks old. Mom is a DSH tabby. Not sure what dad is as they were found as strays. I was wondering if he will be long hair or short hair? Does he have some siamese/ himalayan in him?? The vet said hes a chocolate point.

This is when he was probabaly a week old:

This is mom:

Looks like he'll be shorthaired. The point gene is found fairly commonly in the general cat population, so I wouldn't guess that he has any recent purebred background. But the point gene originally came from Siamese, so it wouldn't be inaccurate to call him a Siamese mix. Even if the Siamese was 100 generations ago! :lol3:

I would guess daddy was a black cat, or possibly grey cat  (grey "blue" = diluted black) and a carrier of the point gene him too.    But if the litter mate isnt black but brown - then daddy was brown, of course.

OK, I see I must revide my post above.  I was looking on this photo, and the other visible kitten seemed black

Now seeing the whole litter of four, the smoke clears out:  daddy is almost surely a point, some dark variation.

The kittens dont seems to be tabby and point, so daddy isnt not tabby and point =lynx point,   tthe tabby kittens get it from momma, whom also is a carrier of the point gene and helped to build these two pointed kittens.

Tabby kittens here are known carriers, as we know daddy was point.

Interesting. Im very curious as to whether they will be long hair or short hair. The foster thinks they will be long hair or at least medium hair but im not too sure.

The longhair gene behaves almost alike the point gene - you need two to dance tango.  Its recessive and must come from both ma and daddy.

Momma seems shorthair, so depending on the fur of daddy, two kittens should be shorthairs, but one or two may be longhair.   That is statistics, but they arent totally ironclad.

As yet we cant know what is kitten fuzziness, and what is long fur.  Compare also with the tails - if bushy its medium or longhair.

Anyways, you perhaps see the difference, knowing at least two of them should be shorthairs.
