Hi there. My 1 & a half year old male korat named Odin is constantly gagging and is unable to meow or purr. We took him to the emergency veterinarian yesterday because we were very concerned about him. The vet examined him and said that he was mostly fine other than a red and likely sore throat. There was no obstruction or anything stuck at all. The vet put him on prednisone once daily but I had to give him a dose in the middle of the night. I called the vet today and asked about giving him more . The vet said to give him the prednisone every 12 hours for 3 days then once daily for 5 days . My concern is that he's not doing any better today and in fact seems to be worse. I'm wondering if there could be something else going on. If anyone has any suggestions it would be very appreciated. Thank you

I share Red Top Rescue's concerns:  that there could be something else going on and if there is a bacterial infection the prednisone won't help.  Infact if you reduce inflamation with some infections without treating the underlying infection you can give the bacteria more of a change to attack because the body's natural defences don't kick in in the same way.

It might be that something has been stuck in Odin's throat and although now dislodged has left him feeling sore and irritated which is why he is still behaving in this way, but if the prednisone hasn't helped him I would want someone to take another look: just in case something has been missed.

Did the vet take a good look around Odin's mouth and down in to his throat?  When he was younger Mouse had a nasty bout of tonsilitis - high temperature, not eating, coughing and trying to clear his throat, and hiding away.  My vet did see it quickly but if I tried to look I couldn't see a thing.  He needed antibiotics as well as pain relief.
