If bushy, the cat is medium, even if he seems shorthaired. And vice versa - with a thin non bushy tail, the cat is shorthair, even if the fur is somewhat longer than on most other shorthairs. Medium hair is genetically longhair gene. I suppose there may be further genes, whom help to decide whom is becoming longhair, and whom mediumhair.
