My brother's cat, Gracie, has severe hyperthyroidism that went untreated for an upsettingly long time. She has since gotten medication, but because my parents insist on feeding our cats that 9 Lives garbage, she has only gained a whopping 3 pounds in a year. None of her lost muscle mass has returned, at all.

Gracie is 13 and I know she has many years in her if she could only get in better health. I am trying to supplement her diet with a high calorie gel and canned tuna and chicken, but I discovered today she won't eat tuna. I haven't tried the chicken yet, but I am doubtful she will eat it.

Please help, I am at my wit's end with her. What can I do to quickly break her junk food addiction and get her to eat her extra protein??

They Love chicken  I'm sorry was informed muscle mass would

not return.  They also love Turkey its high in protien.  Hill's prescription

y/d thyroid tinned cat food -(end of 2015 recalls believe only dog food was affected.)

Best to not offer tuna or fish it's very high in sodium /mercury if you do serve once in a while rinse over and over with water so less salty.

Thank you for the reply and the message.

Gracie seems to like the chicken I gave her, at least. It never occurred to me to rinse the meat first, so maybe that is why she didn't like it-- too salty.

If I can get her to stop filling up on dry food, I think chicken and turkey would do a lot for her. She's also going in for another check-up at the vet; I found out my parents weren't exactly honest with me when I asked about the last time she went in, so I'm sure the vet will have some tips for me too.

My cat developed hypothyroidism at the age of 15. She had lost a lot of weight also. After several blood tests she was on the right strength medication and things started to settle.
It took about 9 months for her to put on a couple of pounds but my vet told me it is difficult for them to regain the weight.
I gave her small amounts of cat food several times a day (up to 6 times) and treats such as chicken as often as I could. Eventually she gained weight but and wanted to eat often. It will take a while but be patient. Good luck .
