Hello

I found my cat as a feral semi feral at 8 months old living in a farm mostly eating her own food catching actual rats and mice mostly.  The farmer said take her it took a while but we did and i tamed her down. I had my own farm at that time but i cared about her and let her in my house. But she stayed wild and would spend most time outdoors. I GOt her spayed and all shots everything did the whole 6 months of revolution every year. I did her leaukima shot every year as well.

I have been doing this for 10 years. Along the way she started to suffer with UTI issues and depression. We fixed that by giving her strong anti biotics fixing the situation and then she turned into her old self agin like a bran new young cat again at 10 years old!

She is back to her old ways she lost her weight and is on this food that makes her really healthy urinary so? We got six months of revolution for her. Rabies shot. is caught up.

Here is the thing i have been told by some drs after giving my cat 10 years of back to back yearly shots of distemper(Fline) leakima it really is pointless in giving her more. They said at this age she is immune to it and i am just pumping more garbage into her for no reason. Other vets say no if she goes outside still is a good idea. But another vet says they ar ejust trying to make money and its not going to help the situation since she has been getting them back to back for so long.

What do you guys think about this? Should after every year getting these shots she still get them? One vet says skip a year or two.  SHe turns nasty after i give her shots. BUT NOT as nasty as my dog turns. My dog becomes very very aggressive after shots and shes a big dog a czech shepherd. So i am not sure. on the dog either who is six and has been getting the shots back to back 3 to 4 diff kinds at once.

Yearly checkup i get done but the shots i dont know. Shes been tested twice for feline leakemia and turned up negative. SHE is a typical calico.

There are risks associated with cat vaccines, and most cats are vaccinated more often than they need to be. The main reason you should not over-vaccinate is because there is a risk of developing sarcomas (cancer) at vaccination sites, and the more often you vaccinate, the greater that risk becomes.

The FVCRP shot does not need to be given yearly. After the first kitten doses and the adult booster, the cat is protected for life from distemper. This vaccine also lessens the severity of URI's, but it is not guaranteed and URI's are usually not serious health problems, so it's not worth repeating the shot every year just for that.

If your cat does not hang out with an FeLV positive cat often, then the risk of her contracting feline leukemia is very low. Most cats have developed a natural immunity to it by the time they are adults, and the vaccine has been shown to be effective for at least 3 years. I would bet that it confers immunity or much longer if not for a lifetime, but long enough studies just haven't been done.

A cat should get a rabies vaccination according to the laws of your province/country to prevent the animal from being euthanized if anything happens, but definitely do the minimum amount of vaccination required. There is a newer vaccine that has been approved to last for 3 years, but even the one year rabies vaccine confers immunity for at least 3 years, probably more.

I got most of my information from http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines#General_Recommendations, if you want to read more about it. I'm not sure about vaccination risks for dogs, but that also might be something worth looking into.

To me, it sounds like your cat probably doesn't need another vaccine again in her life, and vaccinating every year definitely isn't necessary, especially if you think shes suffering from them. Revolution is excellent though. It's very safe and can protect her from lots of diseases that little insects bring, so it's great she's on that.

yes and i do the tapeworm thhing also, leakimia i did yearly in case she got in a fight with soemones cat because shes a ccalico and has that typical calico "bossy" behavviour

We have 2 95 pound imported czech shepherds we got that were used as security dogs for businesses and as livestock protection dogs form coyotes but now they are retired cause i left that and moved to a urban area. THey keep a lot of cats away and raccoons. No coyotes around here that i know of. A lot of houses. SHe stays on our property though also. The dogs know who she is though also and kinda treat her like a puppy since she was here before them. ITs wierd they do not like other dogs and hate wondering dogs or cats but know exactly who she is even if there is another cat that looks just like her.

we cat rats from the river come up. She is an expert at killing them because her mother taught her that as youngster and it never left her mind. She even brought home a large snake once.

THe dogs are also wayy over vaccinated i think i have done the samething to them yearly giving them 4 shots each and they turn so nasty after the shots and have to be seperated. for a few days.
