Mom's cat has many issues.
this one is about her wanting outside so badly she scratches a hole in the screen so flies get in.
Not cool.

Also she had pooped on the carpet and mom did not pick up the poop so she clawed at it to "cover" it...and...well it is down to the wood under the carpet now.

We live in apartments so we will get management to put down some new carpet in the corner, repair it, and by keeping her from pooping behind chairs we ought not to have issues that again.

but how to keep her from clawing the screen?

First off, why is she not pooping in her litter box and why was the poop on the carpet not cleaned up right away? As far as the clawing on the screen I don't know what you can do except close the window. What are the other problems with the kitty? They might all be related.

I do not need to state why she pooped on the carpet.
I want to know how to stop her scratching things such as making a hole in the screen.

Whst sort of scratching things do you have available? Some cats prefer a horizontal surface instead of vertical. Also vertical posts need to be sturdy.

As for the screen; that can be difficult. Can you open the windows from the top instead of the bottom?

There are pet-proof screen materials you can get. If you rent, you might not be allowed to change the screen though. There are also sliding screens you can get, at least she could claw through that before getting to the window screen. Or, yeah, if the windows open from the top that would be easiest.

The adjustable screens W Willowy recommended would work. You just put them in the runners of the windows and lower the windows to hold them in place. Alternatively, you can cut plastic or wire trellises to size and do the same thing, but they have to be a bit flexible so that you can wedge them in.

It is the sliding glass doors to patio. Mom will want to let the heat out in summer. They must be open at evening to cool the apartment. But if we get a new screen to keep out the flies, how to keep the cat from ruining it again? She does it to get outside, not sharpen claws I think.

NICE!

That is helpful.

I will discuss with mom and the management of the apartments.

I live in an apartment, too.  I just bought and installed it myself.  I didn't even bother to ask.  I just did it.

The whole thing cost less than $50.00 and, besides, since my cat was damaging the existing screen I would be responsible to pay for replacing it.  I figure this would put me ahead of the ball.  I stand up for my responsibility to replace damaged items in the apartment BEFORE the landlord complains and I'm making sure that the screen doesn't get damaged in the future.  The kind of screen that I bought, Casper WON'T be able to damage it.  On top of all that, I'm making sure my cat will be safe.  :)

It's not hard to install new screen in a patio door frame.  Anybody who is reasonably handy at home repair tasks can do it in an hour's time.  :)

Just be sure to install the new screen fabric correctly so that it is tight and doesn't sag or buckle.

The ability of ANY screen to maintain strength depends on maintaining even tension in all directions around the frame.

If you can't (or don't want to) do the job yourself, ask a friend or a family member.  I would do the job for you if you bought me a six pack of beer!

If you can't do that, just call your landlord and tell them that you'll buy the materials if your maintenance man puts it in for you.

You can buy him a six pack of beer, too.  It's never a bad idea to keep your maintenance man happy!

Well for some reason the managers here pay for everything the cat destroys. It seems it is because they did not want that cat going to the pound or back to the man who had custody prior to my mom. *shrugs*
The odds are if I tell them it is damaged they will replace it, and if I say there is a cat screen they will say go for it.
