Unusual ears?

Hi friends! Need some help!

I just noticed this on my baby and to be honest I'm not sure if it's always been there or not. It looks different though and I don't know if I should be alarmed.

These spots are just under both ears, the rest of his ears are fine. Can't find any info online..

Again I don't know if it's normal and always been there or if it's new and I should be worried. If anyone recognizes it, any advice is appreciated thank you!

Does the darker coloring go away when you wipe his ears?  It might be some kind of build up.

I noticed this on my cat before, too. It never changed/grew or anything so I assumed it was just normal skin. I've seen it on other cats, too, so I think its ok. I'm interested if others have noticed this as well.
