Hello all,

I adopted a kitten one month ago,  to be company to my older cat(2yrs old). They going along with each other well, eat and play and sleep together. But after the arrival of kitten, my older cat doesn't want to cuddle or play with me, he usually go somewhere else when i come  pet him. still sleeping with me at night. He shows no agression but he was very cuddly cat when he was alone. Is it normal or is he mad at me? or is it because of he has a new playmate and doesn't need my attention? Thanks a lot!

Integrating a new pussycat was never easy. Cats are usually solitary and not pack animals like dogs, that said we've had cats that are best buddies, cats that have grown to barely tolerate the others and cats that ignore the others all together. All you can do is try and show your senior cat that you still love him/or her.

I'm going through that now with Missy and  the new pud Barney. Missy used to live with a very authoritarian maine coon, when he passed on she came out of her shell. She'd come for her breakfast anytime she wanted, sniff, take two licks and walk away. 15 min later she'd show up and finish it. Now 15 min later it's gone, cuz Barney ate it. I've seen a females maternal instinct kick in and the older female will care for the newer kitten as though it was hers. Eventually things usually work themselves out but you have to decide how you'll share your time and efforts between the two puss's.

In my case I was happy with the one cat but my wife insisted I needed one to replace Wessleigh, our departed Maine Coon. Since spouses don't always listen (me as well at times) we wound up with Barney. Like your situation, I hope ours works out. You can only hope that they tolerate each other at this point and maybe things will get better. They usually do eventually but it takes love and patience.

(My opinion based on very many pussycats.)

Try giving the older cat attention on his terms for now. I do not think he is mad at you at all. It seems like he is very bonded to the new kitten. I have 4 cats and my 2nd youngest goes through periods of being very independent which is very similar to the behavior you are describing from your older cat. If he is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom normally then I would not worry too much. My Apollo does not even sleep on the bed much at times. He sleeps by himself on top of the furniture in my living room more than on my bed.

I completely understand what you are saying but cats do things on their own time frame. Is your senior treat motivated? Perhaps you could try using treats to encourage play time. This may just be an adjustment period and things will go back to normal over time. I miss the snuggles and cuddles with my Apollo to when he gets all independent. I have found that he will snuggle and cuddle with me when he is in the mood.
