I have an adult cat who i have had since a kitten and he has never used the litterbox consistently. I have 5 litterboxes and 4 cats. It doesnt seem to matter if they are recently clean or where they are located. He usually goes in front of the front door, which is right next to a litterbox. He just seems to use the box or ignore it whenever he wants. All our cats are fixed and he gets along great with them. Any suggestions?

Mine does this when he's sick, stressed, his box isn't clean enough, or there are things on the floor he simply wants to pee on... it's worth at least a call to the vet.

I have a cat named Sonny that I adopted in 2010 and he is almost 6 years old.  He never had any litter box issues at all until one day he peed on the recliner chair in our den right in front of my hubby.  Someone had peed in the room on the carpeting about a week before and everything was cleaned up immediately with an enzymatic cleaner.  My hubby decided to take our oldest cat Starbuck to the vet for a check-up since she is nine years old and she came back with a clean bill of health.  The problem went away for a week until Sonny peed on the chair.  He went to the vet right after peeing on the chair and was diagnosed with a Urinary Tract Infection.  This was diagnose by testing his urine at the vets office.  He was given an antibiotic injection.  The infection went away and he went right back to using the litter box.

I wish I had realized it was him that was having issues sooner but having 4 cats made that difficult. It was not expensive to treat . I would really recommend you take your baby to the vet for a check-up to rule out a medical issue.  The only sign that Sonny had a UTI was the sudden not using the litter box. I had never dealt with this issue and called a friend up for advice.  She took time off from work and took myself and Sonny to the vet so I did not have to wait for  hubby to get home from work to go to the vet.  When my vet was booked solid she got him scheduled with her vet by putting the appointment in her name.  My friend is also Sonny's former foster mommy.

We've taken him to the vet and they have said they cant find anything wrong. Also tried diffrent kinds of litter and covered vs uncovered boxes. We also put this cat attractant in the boxes for awhile. So far he only uses the box every once in a while. We also tried confining him to a crate for a while and he used the box consistently then, but as soon as he was out he went back to his usual behavior

It sounds like you are dealing with more of a behavioral issue.  I do not have any experience with that.  I hope someone who does can give you better advice.
