Will they ever learn to tolerate each other

My lovely tortoiseshell rescue cat (female) returned home after been missing for 21 months. She was very lean looking  but after a full check-up at the vets she is in perfect health and only a kilo lighter than when she left home. I had resigned myself to the fact she was goner and took in another rescue this time a petite long haired female tabby (3 years old)

Due to the unplanned arrival of my old cat the new one went for her in a vicious chase so we have been keeping them in separate parts of the house and after week two we installed a screen door in the hall so the cats can see each other. We are now half way through week four and although I try to feed them on either side of the door during the day my tortie sticks to the upper levels so they do not come into contact much and even then she gives the screen door a wide berth, issuing a growl when she sees the tabby. Tabby is the opposite she sits hunched at the screen door tail swishing and yowling, she even climbs the screen and poor tortie runs back upstairs growling. Yes I know it's early days and i need to persevere but I am feeling so sorry for my older cat  (7 years old)who is such a gentle natured beast. I'm really worried that my tabby is one of those cats who will not tolerate another cat. I am using feliway plug in but it seems to have no effect on tabby who if she got the chance she will be through the door and beating up the other cat in a flash

i keep asking  myself will they ever get on?

Hi @una61 and welcome to TCS!   Sorry it's taken a while for a reply..

You're doing the right thing, of course, with the slow introduction, and I really don't have anything to add except that I do hope it works out for you!  Others may have more to offer.

In the meantime, I wonder if our 'Everything you could ever possibly want to know about introductions' type article would be of help?

Thank you Mani.

My tabby is so fiercely territorial I am having difficulty imaging her changing at all. Here we go week five.

Into week 7 and no change in attitude from tabby - really thinking this won't work.
