My wife and I have always had between 2 and 3 cats. We had lost one of our family about 6 months ago and last week decided to get a new furry friend.

Barney Bigsleigh was adopted from, the local SPCA and came home with us last friday. Every time we had adopted in the past we always used the safe room setup and slowly integrated the new puss. This time my spouse thought that was unnecessary, I disagreed but I did go along with it  since both cats are extremely docile

Missy, the long time resident is 6 years old and was the submissive pussycat to a loveable but pushy maine coon. She had seemed fairly happy as a solitary cat since Wess had passed on. Missy is a very passive female and extremely affectionate. Barney, the new member of our clan is even more passive and aver affectionate. He's a very active 4 year old that was left with not enough food and water in an empty apartment. He was deemed so laid back that the shelter had him "on the floor" rather than in a cage.

When we brought him home he got away from us and hid in the basement. I put some food and water down and a basket with clean bedding on an empty shelf. I cleared, the next shelf down so Barnety had his own isolated area that had a high ground advantage.

Barney had some sightings of Missy and moved up to the main floor within a few days. Her reaction was limited to some very lethargic hisses. No bats or cuffs, just a weak hiss. barney just got up and walked away. Barney continues to try and sniff Missy, she continues with the hisses. He still has his perch in the basement with water and dry food, we feed wet several times daily.  My avatar is Barny and the picture below is Missy

Welcome to TCS! That sounds like a very promising start between Barney and Missy. A few hisses in the early days are pretty normal.

Welome to TCS!
Both Barney and Missy are really very beautiful cats.  Where did the Bigsleigh come for Barney's second name?  I bet there is a story behind that.

Poor Barney being abandoned like that.  And how lucky that he has such a good family now.  I hope we hear (and see) lots more about Barney and Missy in the future.  This is a great site with lots of friendly people who will definitely appreciate your kitties.

Bigsleigh is a play on my last name as is my user name "beaser". I name my buddies and my wife names hers. They wind up a joint love anyway but it's fun. I replaced Beas with Bigs. Barney Bigsleigh has a ring to it. My late maine Coon was Wessleigh Bigsleigh.

Back to the puds. We've always had multiple cats but never so docile a pair. Our daughter has a Malamute, a Patterdale Terrier and currently only 4 cats. Normally there is wailing, gnashing of teeth and more than enuff posturing at the beginning of an adoption. This caused us to take a shortcut we normally don't take. The other issue was our local shelter has a really good track record lately with upper respiratory issues. Our last go around with adoptions  was a tad troubling.
