Hello, we have two cats, one Russian Blue cross (aged 16) and one "Black-and-Whiter" aged 8. They annoy but tolerate each other, and always have and always will!

They don't normally get this close (without at least a ridge in the duvet separating them).

The black-and-whiter (Tippy) tends to get feline cystitis. The other one (Charley) eats to quickly and honks up on the carpet on a regular basis, but otherwise they are fairly problem free, except for Tippy being somewhat overweight.

Welcome to TCS!
Tippy and Charley are lovely cats!  This is a great place to discuss any problems you might have with them - or just to regale us with stories about them because we all love cats!  My Chula does that business with eating too fast and throwing up on the carpet, too.  You might try raising the bowl up a few inches as this slows them down.  Also, try putting a glass upside down in the bowl to push the food to the outside - this works, too.  Hope to see you around!

Thanks for the advice about the bowls to slow down the eating. Worth a try -- although she doesn't eat particularly quickly, she just doesn't know when to stop, particularly if she has been quite hungry beforehand. She probably only burp-barfs once a week on average, so it isn't too bad!

Part of the problem is that her "little" sister, Tippy (who was a rescue kitten that we picked up from a cattery we had taken Charley to when we moved across Australia and were temporarily staying in a Hotel) is twice her size and scarfs down all the food given any opportunity. This probably also prompts Charley to eat more than she ought to.

Tippy isn't hugely fat, but is very tall and weighs in at 7.5Kg vs Charley's 4 Kg.  Getting the right amount of nutrition to two very different sized/aged cats is a bit of a challenge in itself. In the picture below, Charley looks smug, on account of having no idea what a big porker Tippy was going to turn into!

Could you possibly feed them in different areas?   That might help.  Getting Tippy away so that  Charlie can eat undisturbed might cure the problem.

Regardless, you are so very welcome here at TCS!  Please run around and explore our forums.  I found out stuff I would never have guessed within the first week of stumbling in here last year!  And have made friends that I will treasure for a lifetime!

Hi, thanks for the welcome!  We do often lure the Tipper-monster away, just to give Charley peace and quiet when she is eating. Unfortunately, the house isn't well set up to have properly separated areas for them to eat, but there is a foot and a half or so between bowls. They do both know which bowl belongs to which, and will use the correct bowl most of the time. Plus, if you give Tippy a stern look she will walk away from Charley's bowl, if she has been engaging in a bit of stealing :) At this time of the year she is mostly found in baking distance of the wood stove.
