Meet Cheeky!

Little miss Cheeky has been with me since this past Sunday night, May 15th. I spent a week getting my house spotless and getting everything needed in preparation before picking her up. When I picked her up, the woman had told me that the kittens were 7 weeks, litter trained and eating hard food. I thought 'AWESOME', she's ready to come home <3

Everything has gone perfect thus far - Apart from her not eating. I expected her not to for at least the first night, considering she may have been nervous in getting to know her new home...but no issues, except not eating. She played her first night, drank from the water dispenser, explored, slept, explored some more and even stalked our eldest cat her first night. Cheeky is incredibly brave, rambunctious, adventurous and well......very very cheeky. LOL! She gets along incredibly well with myself and my boyfriend and just started being accepted by our 7 year old cat, Elizabeth (Lizzy), who she has been following non stop and chasing each other around the house. (Thank goodness)

Monday went by and I tried everything to feed her. She sat next to Lizzy while Lizzy ate and seemed very interested but did not eat her food. I asked the previous owner for the dry food they were feeding her because I am very strict in transitioning my animals and I don't want any problems if they can be avoided. I bought her Fancy Feast kitten formula soft food and warmed it up with the hard food the previous owner had her on. (Kit-N-Kaboodle is the brand they were feeding her, not my style, but to each their own I suppose.) She did not touch it after she sniffed it. So, I then tried giving her just the hard food they said she was eating, but nothing. She showed absolutely no interest in the Kit-N-Kaboodle, didn't even take a whiff. :(

Tuesday rolls by and I'm freaking out, that's how I am. She is showing no signs of illness, distress, nothing. The Vet the previous owner took Cheeky to said she was in great health and to continue what they were doing. I feed Lizzy (my eldest) Merrimack adult healthy weight mixed with Instinct Raw food. She used to be my grandmother's and was not in the best shape so I took Lizzy and she is the healthiest she's ever been. I'd like Cheeky to follow suit in the diet. I went to my pet store to buy some extra things to spoil the girls with and I was on a mission to get kitten milk. I want my babies to get the absolutely necessary nutrition they need and so I came home, followed the instructions and Cheeky was STARVED. That's how fast she was lapping up and going crazy. But I was informed that she was eating the Kit-N-Kaboodle so I don't understand. Maybe they lied to me? So my mother and the associate at the pet store both told me to try and soak the Merrimack hard food in with the formula. I tried that, she drank the milk all around and even suckled the hard food but they were left in the bowl. So, when it came around 3-4 hours later, she was meowing up something fierce, so she must be hungry and she knows I have the milk now, oh jeez. Another thing I read was at least try her Fancy Feast soft kitten food and mix it in with the formula. I didn't want to waste anything, so I gave her a very little bit at first. No go, she wanted just the milk.

So here's the famous question: WHAT AM I DOING?! lol Will she grow out of this? My Vet called me back this morning and told me to come bring her in for a quick wellness visit but from everything I told my vet, he said it sounds like she's doing awesome. He also told me that kittens can continue to drink the milk for up to 4 months and it's usually recommended to mix it with their food. That's great and all and I will do but how am I going to transition her? Any feedback is more than appreciated and this is my first baby pet I've taken under my care for the first time. I want everything to be purrrfect! <3 Thank you peeps!

My best,

Bonnie (First time mommy to a kitten)

7 weeks is very young to get a kitten. They need at least 8 weeks with mama if they can have it.

Feed her a lot of milk if she is refusing to eat, and keep trying at it. Keep up with mixing the KMR in with fancy feast kitten chow into a mush that she can lap up, and she will come around eventually.

Leave dry kitten food out for her at all times. Kitten food. Not cat food. Kit-N-Kaboodle only makes cat food, and it's not a very good quality, my kitties hate the stuff. I had to buy it from BP once when they ran out of food and it was too late at night to go to the petsmart, they refused to eat it.She could be picky.

If you can't afford healthier kitten foods, purina dry kitten chow works. The problem with adult cat food is it does not contain NEAR enough nutrients for a growing kitten and the pieces are way to big for a kitten to eat easily, so they often won't eat it.

I think it's likely the person who gave her to you was lying about her progress with dry food, if not, the kitten is just in a high stress new place and will come around.

Just keep working with her, offer dry kitten food out at all times, leave water out, continue mixing wet kitten chow in with kmr and offering it to her, she will eat it soon. Until she does, make sure she is getting enough KMR to replace what food would do. Read the back of the kmr product for how much per OZ of body weight and feed accordingly. Keep us updated and welcome to TCS :)

I believe you were not told the truth about your kitten's eating habits! Your kitten is clearly not weaned.

I agree with your vet. Continue with the kitten milk. It's formula, right? What brand, and is it the powder?

At this point the baby needs unlimited milk. You can try weaning with Gerber turkey or chicken baby food. Most kittens love it. At some point she will be ready for pate style wet food, but isn't right now. She'll eventually need dry kitten chow as well, but there's no rush.

Do you know how much she weighs?

I'm sure she feels better now that she's drinking milk. Kittens should not go longer than a day without food. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

She looks really small, and I'd guess she's probably a bit younger than even 7 weeks--and very much not ready to be away from mom cat, since she's not been weaned onto solid food. Kitten formula is the way to go, and weigh her to get a better indication of whether or not she should have been adopted out yet. At the shelter where I volunteered, we would adopt out orphaned kittens when they were approx. 8 weeks old or 2 lbs in weight, whichever came last.

You sound like your an amazing mommy. I know this post is old, but I'd love to know how cheeky is doing. We raise Ragdoll’s so I'm so there with you on the food thing. I would never feed my cats or kitten's any walmart cat food. We also do freeze dried raw. Stella and Chewy is amazing. We had the instinct kitten Freeze dried raw chicken when we had a issue with our delivery of Stella and they loved it too. Waa freaking our because switching to something they aren't used to will definitely mess up their belly. Anyways, cheeky is blessed to have you..

Always, Jennifer Carter

Hi JennCarter1207 JennCarter1207

You’ve posted on a thread from 2016, but your new kitten sounds very healthy, and I agree to give the milk for now. Once she gets comfortable in her new environment she will most likely begin to try kitten chow and soft pate style food. Kittens this age will often go for Gerber chicken or turkey meat baby food as well, but for now she’ll get plenty of nutrition from the kitten formula as long as she gets plenty of it. The kitten is adorable! :lovecat2:
