Can I use essential oils safely around my cats?

Lets start off with this: I know how dangerous essential oils can be to our feline friends. And it worries me a great deal!

I have quite a few bottles of essential oils that are always kept away from kitties and are usually only used on my wrists before bed as I find them a helpful sleep aid. However, I'm currently in the process of cleaning up my apartment before moving out, and would like to use (very) diluted oils as a carpet freshener after I vacuum. It really helps take out the animal smells and freshens up a room.

Essentially (haha!) my question is: is it safe for me to mist a mixture of water (~a pint) and ~10 drops of oil as a very light room freshener, or is it unwise with cats around? Another option would be for me to wait until the day of the move and only use this mixture after the cats have been moved to a safe room in the new place.

What do you think? Any other oil users around? I absolutely don't want to risk the health of my cats.

I would suggest waiting until you have moved the cats, in the interests of "better safe than sorry."  Evidently some oils are toxic to cats even just breathing them and others are not, so if you aren't an expert on which is which, just wait.

We had a thread about this just recently, and there is an article mentioned that gives the details of which is worse, so you can read that from the link in the thread.
