Hello,

I have a british short hair female 8 months old now. I heard that British they need at least 1.5 year to grow up enough to get pregnant... Is that true?

Also what i need to take care in pregnancy and where is better to give birth? I mean do i need to prepare a place for her?

Thanks

Yeah, you have a lot of reading to do.  We have suitable articles here in this forum. Look around and you will see.

British may be a little later bloomers, so the 1,5 year sounds alike a good time to start if you wanna breed.  But become fertile they may be earlier.

Quiestion is if you have a real BS, or if its a domestic, whom is somewhat a look alike.  Do you have pedigree certificate on her, or at least, a reliable history?

So, my first question is why you want to breed her. It's a really expensive and involved hobby, and there is certainly a lot of reading to do. But if you start with your reasoning we can help you to think it out.

Then I would recommend you start by getting involved with active breeders! Start going to shows and learning about the breed and find a mentor. Perhaps whoever sold you your cat? You'll want to do a lot of research and face to face meetings before you go about doing any breeding.

I would highly recommend that you foster a pregnant mama cat in need before you breed your female and find out if it's for you. There are significant risks to your cat and to the babies, and while it can be rewarding, I would see how you feel first. Ideally you have a great outcome, but you don't know.

Hello there,

Thanks for your advice:p

I already found my mentor by the breeder that i took her. She is definitely very good and she knows a lot of thing about this breed.

I also start now going to some shows and the next one will take place on November so it could be nice to go.

I used also to have a mamma in my home one year ago and i have learned a lot of things from her.

Anyway until she will be ready for pregnancy we have at least another 7 months so i thing i will be fine:p

Ah, so your female isnt pregnant as yet?   We all got the impression  she was pregnant, and you began to desperately ask the necessary questions...

You just asked because you were beginning to plan on it??   Very good, exemplary!

This with taking care of  high pregs in need is an excellent preparatory for a wannabe breeder.  You get invaluable experience, and at the same time you help cats in need. Its a very praiseworthy deed,  giving you also much extra Karma.

Just be sure you are strict with hygiene and cleaning off, including sterilisation, when they move on to their adoption homes.

"On the pureness and reputation of Ceasars wife, there may not even be a trace of any shadow".   If you shall participate in Shows, or have the stud visiting, or you visiting other breeders, everybody shall be sure there is not any risk of contagion.

Most breeders I do know, does also help homeless cats and shelters in some form, but most of them do it in distance; by advices, giving away some gears, donating, etc...  And also sharing useful adresses to good adoption homes.    Not to risk contamination.

I remember one polish breeder of russian blue, whom wanted to adopt a homeless moggie from the street outside their home, as companion to her RB.  So she let her boyfriend, a lawyer, take it in for the usual quarantine, and simultaneously do the fostering.   That was a revelation.  Whom could imagine a lawyer could be such a nice, cat friendly person?  It was very touching to read...   Its sometimes very nice to stand corrected.   :)

But qute a few wannabe breeders are foster homes for high pregs, yes.
