Hello! So currently I am feeding my kitten Chicken Recipe from Blue Buffalo and mixing in beef also. However it is really hurting my wallet and I want to switch her over to fancy feast because it is more within my budget when she is around 1 years old however I know that it has by product which is really bad but I also  heard it is fine for animals to eat.

Can someone tell me what their experience is with Fancy Feast? Is there one that is better than the other or worse than the other? Or should I just stay away?

Also if someone could recommend me a brand of food that is "cheap" but still good quality.

Thank you!

There's nothing wrong with Fancy Feast. Most people stick with the Classic / Gourmet ones than the other kinds (Gravy Lovers, Elegant Medleys, etc) because they are lower in carbs and there's more meat than water / gravy. Sometimes a store's generic brand is pretty similar to Fancy Feast and costs a little less, like Wal Mart's Special Kitty brand.

Some people feed mostly inexpensive brands and occasionally feed a higher quality brand if budget allows.

Here are some threads about affordable canned foods:

The little 3 oz cans of Fancy Feast add up in cost over time since 3 oz is pretty much one meal for many cats. A brand that is available in larger sized cans is more cost effective. Friskies is another good inexpensive brand that has larger sized cans.

We feed Fancy Feast Classics most of the time in our household.  The Classic varieties are grain-free and low-carb, and our kitties love them.  I would avoid seafood flavors, and also those flavors with gravy or cheese or veggies.

Don't be too concerned about the by-products.  Here's a TCS article that might help you feel more at ease: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/by-products-in-cat-food-5-facts-you-need-to-know

I would, however, avoid by-products meal.

[ My cats died at age 27,26 and 25 years old. I fed Purina canned foods and left dry out to snack on(Paul Newman's).. They were never overweight. Healthy cats. My new batch of cats now 18 years and 19 years eat Fancy Feast because they started vomiting from Friskies. I leave whole Foods dry food out during the day.]

I agree with the others! Fancy Feast Classics are very decent food: if I had to choose between those and Blue Buffalo, I'd probably chose FF. FF doesn't have the carby ingredients, like potato and rice, that BB adds to their chicken kitten foods I looked at, and FF is carrageenan-free, too. I'd take by-products over potatoes any day!

I would definitely stay away from the Fancy Feast foods with wheat gluten, stuff like medleys and gravy lovers. They're carbier and cats really shouldn't be eating all that wheat gluten to begin with.
