Our red tabby Alex has had runny and extremely itchy eyes. I use expensive Lise Watier wipes that I remove makeup with. After many expensive vets he's wearing a cone 24/7. Best guess is allergies. Vet has him on steroids daily which I'm concerned about. She isn't a vet who allows opinions and comments so I'm reaching out to cat site for insight . I will see another vet in same clinic and ask about Reactine with bit of steroid. I'm worried about Alex being 17 getting diabetes . Please let me know your comments.

I'm not familiar with those makeup wipes you are using, but not at all sure they are good for use on Alex.  They may contain ingredients that could get in his eyes and cause him even more issues, particularly if he's got allergy problems.  Did you tell your Vet that's what you are using?  Why not simply use water to wipe the gunk off.  Why is Alex wearing a cone....is he trying to scratch his eyes?  If allergies are suspected, does this only happen during certain seasons?

I think seeing a different Vet who lets you at least give your two cents if definitely a good idea.  It should always be a two way street

I use wipes occasionally and gives relief to Alex. Use to get stubborn under eye guck off easily . Eyes watery and itchy all year long and has been tested and does not have any disorders , HIV etc

So this Reactine you mentioned looks like it's the same thing as Zyrtec here in the U.S. (I'm guessing you're NOT in the U.S.)  Zyrtec is definitely one of the allergy pills some folks here give to their cats with allergies, so maybe it would help.  No way of knowing without trying.

As to using steroid if the Reactine doesn't work, sometimes you've got to pick which is worse...the possibility of issues down the road for an elderly cat, or relief NOW.  Plus with steroids, they try to use a low enough dose to prevent problems later.  Doesn't always work, but they try.

We are in Toronto. Canada. Steroid helps a lot. When Alex was on Reactine (anti-histamine allergy med). He was 80 percent better but still suffering. Steroid 95 percent better but needs 7 mg per day. Wonder about combination of Reactine and perhaps 2 1/2 mg steroid. Will ask vet on Wed. Never do anything without vet consultation . Wonder if anyone gave cat combo ?
