Wondering what others think of this:

https://www.mypetcarnivore.com/inde...roduct_id=50&virtuemart_category_id=2&lang=en

Seems like the added hearts and gizzards should bring down the bone content...does this seem balanced for kitties to you?  I add alnutrin for meat and bone.

Having issues with bone content and constipated kitties (not feeding this food currently).  Currently I am purchasing local prepared raw (I estimate bone content to be 12-15%) and am adding in additional meat and liver (no other organ...cause I can't figure out where to purchase chicken organ or turkey organ and everybody pukes on beef).

We order from MPC a lot. For my cat with chronic constipation problems, I add muscle meat to this mix. I do, however, buy the fine ground in 1 pound containers. I wish I could get it in 2 lbs, but right now all they offer is the coarse ground.  For feeding dogs some grinds, it's fine, but the chunks of bone can be a bit too large for my comfort level regarding cats.  JMO :)

Also...hare today has some turkey and chicken organs available.

My cats DO seem to prefer MPC over HT, but I believe HT gasses and MPC butchers chickens the "old fashioned way".

Hope this helps!

Does MPC say how much fo the chicken is used in their ground chicken mixtures? Body and organs (minus entrails hopefully) only? Head? Feet?

I emailed a while ago asking about the thyroid gland, this was the response.

"The only things we remove are the intestines and feathers/fur/hides.  We do remove the heads of mutton, young beef and goats as they are too hard to run through the grinder

We hope that helps, but if you need anything more, please do not hesitate to let us know."

I know for sure the feet are in the coarse grind, I've seen little chicken toes.

Thank you all!

Bruce - good to know about the grind...we re-grind the local pre-made food we get (their grind is too course as well)...so if you have experience with this and it's "boney" then, I'll take you word for it and preemptively regrind.  In terms of muscle meat, what are you adding?  The last batch I mixed up from local pre-made (20lbs pre-made), I added 4lbs thigh meat, 2lbs gizzards, 2lbs heart, and 2lbs chicken breast.  Still waiting to see if this will make a difference on output.  First time that I have added heart...thought I read that the rich heart might help improve their constipation.

I haven't seen any chicken or turkey organ (non-liver organ) at Hare Today.  I can only find their "organ" grind which is heart (meat), gizzard (meat), and liver.

I really wish I had fewer cats.  :-)  No one can agree on what to puke up...no one can stand beef, the picky one upchucks on rabbit, the little one just demonstrated a severe dislike for cornish game hen, and, last week, the older one told me quail was a no-go...At least they all eat chicken and turkey without issue.  But trying to add another protein source is driving me crazy.  :-)  Not to mention finding non-liver organs to mix into it.

I usually add a like amount of plain ground chicken or turkey (no organs, no bones) to whatever grind I find. If I'm using a ground bony-er mix, I add much more muscle meat (for instance, their ground turkey necks seem much higher in bone than, say, the whole ground chicken does, so I add more meat to the necks than I do whole prey grinds.)

I hear you on the numbers issue; the more we have the more complicated it can seem sometimes. The cat I've been monitoring for constipation (has been doing well) suddenly decided diarrhea was much more fun. Sigh. I've got one that can have no beef of any description, one that needs a much lower bone content than the rest, several that prefer grinds vs chunks (so I keep both on hand), and Little Miss Munchie hoarks up rabbit. The weather has gone from pleasant to warm to hot to hot and humid to incinerator, and when it gets warm my cats eat a bit less so I'm wondering if the random puke fests and the cling-on butt races across the living room (seriously, that rug is completely ruined) has something to do with the sharp increase in temperature.

Do any of you know how MPC compares to Rad Cat in terms of texture? My cats love RC and the texture but it's so pricey. I buy from HT a lot too but they're bored with that mix so I'm thinking of trying the MPC mixes with meat/bones/organs in the containers. Seems like the texture might be similar to Rad Cat?

I've been looking at products from both HT & MPC. What confuses me is they both sell a whole ground chicken, one lists the bone content as 10-15% & HT lists it as 27%. It's the 5lb tub. How is someone supposed to know what to buy? Shouldn't they be the same? I think so. A chicken's a chicken.

I think MPC drastically underestimates the amount of bone in whole chicken.

So how is someone supposed to know what they're purchasing is ok for kitty? I mean I guess I could contact them but I don't want to have to ask about every product that I'm interested in. It's basically only ground, they don't offer chunks which I want to add some on top of the ground.

I mean for HT, you really think the numbers listed are accurate?

Well I'd request the bone content from the company and see if they can give you a more accurate number than "10-15%." But if that's what they claim, I'd assume it's 15% and dilute according to the calculator to get it down to 10% or below. I do think HT's numbers are correct. Chicken tends to be really boney. I don't feed any HT poultry grinds because I'm way too lazy to dilute. I just buy the ones that have a more appropriate bone content, which are rabbit, pork, and some beef grinds. The quail and mouse have good numbers too.

But even if you added chunks on top of the ground poultry, wouldn't that be ok? That would surely dilute the bone.

Oh one other thing I keep forgetting to ask, EZ's first ingredient is liver. If someone used boneless meat along with liver & then added the EZ Complete, isn't that too much? I know cats can have a toxicity to too much vit A

EZcomplete is intended for use only with boneless muscle meat, not organs. Meaning: do not use liver!
