My cat just turned 20. Last week he stopped eating and was lethargic, but was drinking a lot of water. Before that he had a lot of diarrhea and had barfed a bit. I took him to the vet on Friday and they rehydrated him, gave him emergency food which he scarfed down. They also took blood.

I took him back Sunday and was told his levels were normal except for his WBC (His kidneys and liver were elevated but not in the danger zone). They gave him more hydration and an antibiotic shot.

On Monday and Tuesday he seemed better and was eating more but the last three days he seemed to be back to barely eating, lethargic, and drinking lots of water. The vet asked if we could coax him into drinking more water by adding tuna juice to it. He wasn't interested in the tuna water but he seemed to like drinking cold water.

He's only eating a little. He's ignoring all cat foods but he's been eating a little bit of tuna. Maybe half a can a day.

So my question is.

It's been six days since the shot, would he still be having issues with the infection? And the antibiotic shot? Should I kept monitoring him and making sure he always has fresh cold water? Or should I take him for another vet visit. Could this also be dehydration?

I'm worried we've entered palliative care. I also feel guilty because I had his teeth cleaned a month and a half ago and maybe I shouldn't have.

I've had him since he was 9 weeks old. I don't want him to suffer but I'm also not sure if it's "The time".

Hi, so sorry the two of you are going through this.  A 20-year-old - wow!  Have you ever used human baby food to tide you over during a feeding crisis like this?  That's one suggestion to further stimulate his appetite, although it's good that he's eating the tuna.  Either Gerber 2nd or Beechnut turkey is what I normally use.  The Fancy Feast appetizers that are in a little oblong plastic dish are also very tempting to cat and contain no fillers.  I think another vet visit is a very good idea, considering his age and lack of appetite.  Sometimes when an elderly cat is ill, they need oral antibiotics rather than a shot.  He may well need Sub-Q fluids and/or pain meds.  I would definitely keep offering both food and water to him and try to get him in to see the vet as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow.  Please keep us posted.  Prayers for you both.

Thanks.

Turns out there is something wrong with his liver (the vet couldn't give him a biopsy bc he could bled). He's home and we're giving him meds and fluids.

I'm playing it by ear. If it doesn't seem like he is going to recover, I'll send him to the "Land of Noms" with his brother and sister.

I'm so sorry to hear about his liver.  20 years old is a nice long life for a cat, but however long a cat lives, it never seems to be long enough.  I hope the vet gave you something for pain to give to him.  Just make sure he is comfortable and happy for as long as possible and when the time comes, do what is merciful.  And who knows, he may very well surprise you, I've seen them do that.  Most cats are fighters, sometimes for themselves and sometimes for us.  I've had cats that I know kept up the fight because I couldn't bear to lose them.  Just make sure he's not in pain.  Prayers for you both.

Hi Maggie,

I just wanted to let you know that Gamos recovered from his illness as best a 20 year old can. He's eating now and is more alert, but we still have to give him hydration and pills.

What a precious boy!  I had a 19-year-old who became very ill.  He was on meds for the last 2 1/2 months of his life.  If your baby is eating, that is quite an achievement in a cat that age.  Is he on anything for pain or do you have something available if he needs it?

I didn't see this thread until now, so missed your initial posting back in May.  Glad to see that Gamos is feeling better.  He's a very handsome kitty.
