Hey Guys, So we had a cat outside the last year we have been feeding (was left by the mom when he was weened off) I went outside in the morning and seen he was hurt pretty good... his foot was bleeding and he was panting heavily. I went to get my stuff to take him to the vet but when I went back he was gone already. I spent a lot of the day and night looking and calling for him. I didnt see him till the next morning then we took him to the vet.

Turns out his foot is infected, they shaved and cleaned it and gave some antibiotics, and gave us some pills to take home to give him. The one side of his foot looks okay, there is one puncture wound, but the other side is also injured and this side I noticed it looks wet and also noticed pus coming out (green whitish color)... This is 2 days after we took him to the vet. They told us not to keep it covered so it will heal more quickly dry, we also have a cone on him so he wont lick it. But I was wondering is it normal for this discharge to come out? Should I be doing anything about it, or is that part of the healing process? I am still giving him antibiotics as described by the vet. I havent cleaned his wound either, as they didnt tell us anything about that.. So should I be doing that with some diluted iodine or something?

Also we have decided we are going to keep him in the house now, we originally didnt want to as our 3 year old female tries attacking him, but we just have to keep them separated now.

I'm glad that you'll be able to keep him inside and thank you for getting him medical care. Is he neutered? Is your female fixed? That would be the first step to a harmonious household. You also will want to do a proper cat introduction once he is healed. You can't just throw two cats together and hope for the best, unfortunately.

I think as long as it's draining and as long as he's on antibiotics he should be ok. I would ask about an ointment in additon.

Okay thanks, i planned to call them today, but its still early morning here so have to wait so figured id ask here first.

For the cats, he isnt neutered yet that is something we will do soon once he is better... I wanted to get him vaccinated but they also said to wait until he is healed. We did do a blood test though and he was negative for those 2 things i cant remember one was feline leukemia. I figure it will take some time for them to get used to each other... But we had been bringing him in the house at night from sunset until dawn because of another feral male outside attacking him for about the last 10 days, so she has already seen him quite a bit... Not to mention she has been seeing him outside the window for long as well.

Also yes the female has been spayed a few years ago.

Be sure your female is spayed and when this guy gets better, be sure to get him neutered.  It will help ease tensions.

Did you call the vet?  How is the foot today?

Not yet, they open in a few hours where I live... But overall the foot looks slightly better (as far as swelling goes) the size is almost the same size as the unaffected foot. But the only thing looks bad about it is the discharge coming out... But from what I read I think it needs to come out.

Yes the female has been spayed. She has mostly been staying in the bedroom (which she does most the time anyway). Yesterday she jumped up on the sofa and layed down on all 4 paws watching him sleep only an arms length from him. I have to keep a close eye on her though sometimes she will try to have a wack at him, but she probably knows by now because she will look at me when she thinks about it.

These photos are from a few days ago. The bigger one having a peek is the female (name is sticker).

Hey Guys,

Sorry I did not update before, anyway our cat did get better after his leg was bitten but it got worse again just last week.. Apparently the infection may have still been in his leg after the wounds healed. He jumped off a counter in our house and hurt his leg and he was limping and his leg was swollen about 10 days ago, then last week something happened where his leg just started bleeding and the blood was pink which makes me think it was the infection.  We have been to the doctors about 3 times the past week and giving medication everyday but hes starting to look better now... The funny thing is we took him to the vet just 5 days before his leg was swollen and told us nothing about there still being an infection.

Anyway something offtopic, sometimes he gets excited when he rubs against my leg and he just nips at my leg (or maybe my leg hair annoys him) but he did it hard yesterday and actually I had blood slightly on my leg from the bite, I was wondering how worried should I be about rabies? The thing is when we first took him to the vet they advised against this rabies shot since he was in a healing state for his leg. I am only worried because he was an outdoors cat previously and the reason we took him in was because of another cat biting his leg. Of course that was about 45-50 days ago I am not sure how long it takes rabies to show in cats.

So anyways, if its been around 45 days since hes been bitten by the outside cat, do i still need to worry that he could have rabies and i got it from his bite?

He would've shown symptoms of rabies by now so it isn't a worry.  I am glad he is doing better.
