Hi all,

Some of you may have seen my thread in the Nutrition forums regarding my 10 week old kitten's diet and the loose stools/diarrhea she's been having. A couple of nights ago, she had full blown diarrhea and couldn't get to the litter box in time, so it ended up all over the floor and on me. I felt terrible for the poor baby and took her to see the vet the following day. The vet automatically assumed worms, although she's previously been dewormed on April 22nd. They took a stool sample to test for parasites/worms and much to my dismay, it came back negative. I was hoping to have an answer. However, the vet still gave me two liquid medications that I have to give once a day. One is for five days and it's a broad spectrum type medication while the other is for ten days and is specific to one type of parasite in particular.

So last night and this morning before I left for work, Moscato's stools looked to be improving. They weren't liquid puddles or cow patties anymore; they were still somewhat loose, but definitely had shape compared to her previous work. I thought the medication had to be working and we were on the fast track to recovery after a weak of stomach troubles!

When I came home from work a couple hours ago tonight, I checked the litter box only to discover a large puddle of diarrhea that Moscato left uncovered and my hopes plummeted. I guess I was so quick to assume she was getting better that I set myself up for disappointment. I have no idea how long until I should actually expect to see results from the deworming medication. I'm just afraid that the worms aren't the problem because then things will get tricky.

My roommate leaves dry food out for her cat all day, and Moscato's been munching on it from time to time. It's Purina so it isn't grain-free like the Merrick's I had Moscato on originally, but once she got a taste of the Purina she instantly seemed to prefer it over the Merrick's although I still try to keep her out of the other cat's food bowl when I'm home and able to. I'm scared that it's a dietary issue causing Moscato's stomach to be upset because my roommate isn't really willing to change her cat's feeding habits to accommodate my new kitten.

Moscato acts like she feels just fine, but then again she's a kitten so it could be hard to say. I'm just really stressing over this. I don't know much about deworming medication or when it's safe to say it's been effective or not.

Kittens get lots of things that can cause diarrhea, and it doesn't clear up overnight.  I'm not sure what medications she's gettting.  There are quite a few things that dont show up on fecal exams even if they have them, things that only show up when they are "blooming" so to speak.  Your two medications are probably directed at the most common of those.  As long as she is eating and not acting sick, just stay with the current meds and give them time to work.  If she starts acting sick, then go right back to the vet.
