I have a one year old cat that has never had any problems with peeing outside the box. But now all of a sudden he has started to do it. Why can that be?

He's got sores on his ears due to allergies and because of that he has a cone on. We take it off each day so he can clean himself, but he has been wearing it for a couple of weeks now.

Can it be that hes tired of the cone or is that just me projecting? He's been wearing the cone on and off since he was diagnosed with allergies, but has never had a problem with going to the litter box with it on. The boxes are very easy to get to.

I would love any help, tips and ideas from you guys!

What a beautiful cat!!

Usually when a cat stops using the litter box it is because of pain. It can also be because of territory insecurity.

Where is she urinating? Just outside or near doors or windows?

Any changes in drinking or number or amounts of urination?

Any chance he has stones?

It might be worth a vet visit as there very well might be a medical issue going on.

He wasnt urinating near doors or windows and he actually hasnt done it since i posted this. However, I did make an appointment with our vet for next week to have him checked out.

Thank you for helping!

Nicolina,

So glad you have a vet appointment. Thank you so much for taking such good care of him.

How many days and times did he go outside the litter box? I should have asked this on the prior post.

Was there any other different behavior between the other cats and this one? Any chasing or anything? Just anything different?

It could be the allergies/sores.

Hopefully the vet can rule things out and then we can try to figure out what it is (hopefully it was just temporary and it is over, fingers crossed).

By the way, your profile cat pic is another adorable cat.

Do let us know what the vet says! Getting the all clear (or a diagnosis and treatment) is the first thing to do in such cases. Next, stress can definitely be a factor as can issues with your litterbox setup. Here's more information on solving litterbox problems in cats -

Of course! I'll always take my babies to the vet if something feels off. They mean the world to me and I took on the responsibility when I adopted them [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

We actually had to take him to the emergency vet today instead of the regular vet on Tuesday. He wasn't able to keep anything down as of last night (we noticed this morning). We ales about the peeing and he said that it definitely could be because of pain and/or just him feeling not so good at the moment. Turns out he's got an inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract. He's been given fluids and is starting a round of treatment tomorrow.

And to answer your questions, there was no change with the other cats and their relationship/behaviour towards him. And he's peed outside the box maybe five times. One was just now when we came home from the vet. That I can totally understand! He was away from home for five hours and it must've been really stressful for him.

Thank you for helping out!
Also, the cat in the picture is Tundra! [emoji]10084[/emoji]️ She's a real sweetheart!

Here's a picture of Lito with a bump of fluids on his shoulder [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

I went to the vet today (emergency vet unfortunately. He got a lot worse really quickly) and he did an ultrasound which showed that he's got an inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract. They also drew some blood the see if they can find anything more there. Since me and my partner are home a lot, Lito was able to come home with us again. He needs to be under observation for the next few days. I explained a little in the comment above what the vet said about the peeing. :)

The most important thing right now is to make him feel better again and hopefully, then, he will go back to using the litter boxes properly. [emoji]128077[/emoji][emoji]127996[/emoji]

Thank you for the link! I will definitely check it out so I know what to do if it doesn't solve itself! [emoji]128516[/emoji]

good luck!

Stress can play a big factor-and seeing a neighbors cat in the yard can drive them batty!
Thanks for answering! We went to the vet today and it's most likely pain and/or discomfort that's causing the peeing. He's currently not feeling so good because of an inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract. Hopefully the peeing will return to the box when he gets better! [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Nicolina,

I am so glad you took Lito to the vet. I am so hoping that he gets well soon. Thank you for the picture, he is absolutely adorable.

Tundra is beautiful, such a wonderful picture.

Once Lito's medical issues are cleared up I am sure he will use the litter box again.

Good luck with Lito and I hope he gets better real soon. Please keep us up on his progress and let us know if you need any advice any time.

Thank you so much!

Lito is doing so much better! He has not peed outside the litterbox since his medical problems improved. He got worse before getting better, but he is definitaly out of the woods now.

Thanks everyone for helping out and supporting me!
