Hi,

Recently i have taken in two pregnant cats. They have been dumped by their owner because of the pregnancy and needed shelter.

I have had them for about 3 weeks now, and it looks one is a little more pregnant than the other, but they arent that far apart.

They are sisters and they are quite friendly towards eachother. I have two small sons (4 and 2) who are excited about having kittens, but naturally im keeping them away from the girls so they can take some rest.

One of them seems to having some clear discharge and just wants to be in my spare room. When i go in there shes -all- over me for attention. She miauws, shes purring so loud as soon as she knows im there and she only wants me to be there.

Im not sure if shes going into labor now or that its going to take a long time to come cause im not really sure how long theyve been pregnant. According to their previous owner (dont you just hate those people?) she could be 9 weeks around now....

I might be freaking out, im not sure yet !

Now.. do i keep the cats apart ? Obviously i dont have an endless amount of spare rooms, but i could clean our one of my boys rooms and have them camp together in one bedroom.

Also, i think they might have worms aswell, do i deworm now or wait till the kittens are born ? They dont seem to have fleas, so thats at least one plus!

I also have one grumpy old gal running around here that doesnt agree to all of this commotion at all and grumps her way around :) She isnt aggressive but she sure can growl and hiss. I will keep grandma away from the litters.

Anyways, ive been reading a lot here and you guys seem so kind and helpful that i just needed to register and ask my questions... and maybe you can guide me a little when im running into trouble ? pretty please ?

The cats will obviously -all- be neutered as soon as thats possible, and ill keep the mommas myself.

thanks in advance!

If she has discharge from her vulva then it seems like she's close enough. Is she constantly licking her rear?
If she is around 9 weeks, then she's due anytime & I'm not sure about the worming thing but it's most likely that her kittens will catch the worms off her once they are born x

Hello!

I know EXACTLY how you feel!  I have 2 Mommas- a mother, and a daughter, that gave birth within 2 weeks of each other- between the  both of them, we have 12 kittens! Their original owner dumped them at the shelter I work with. Those kind of people STINK, don't they?

I kept my 2 in the same the room- and they ended up helping each other along.  Do you have one room for them?

It sounds like the one cat might be in early labor  There are others on this board that know much more than I.  I do you have supplies?   Yu should have  a scale to weigh the kittens, some  sort of heat source (Like  a heating pad that can be set on low) for the kittens, some KMR and a syringe. - and she will need some nests set up.

On the top of the forum, there are some great  posts about what to expect  and what happens with the birth!

Good luck!  I'm rooting for you!

Also, we LOVE to see pics!  Can you share pics of your two girls,

and most of all- THANK YOU FOR TAKING IN THESE SISTERS!   What a wonderful person you are!

You can keep the sister cats in one room together. It does sound as if one cat is in labor or very close. Keep an eye on her.

You can worm now. Do you have meds from a vet?

Im sorry. that kind of took a while.

Sally, the one that i suspected was near labor, blessed us with 4 little perfect kittens.

A black one, a calico one and two black and white ones. They all weigh above 100gr, with one weighing 123 grams

The sisters are treating eachother nicely and mumcat does a perfect job. I had a full kitten-kit ready (stolen a list of you guys in other peoples threads, thanks for that!). Mom did not cut the cords of the first two kittens so i gave her a little help. Nr3 and 4 were brought into the world without help of me :)

She screamed it out when the first kitten was born, but she only really had 30 minutes of contractions before the first kitten was born, and the rest came swiftly after. Sally herself is not even a year old, but shes is doing an amazing job.

All the kittens were nursing within the hour. I have just moved everyone to a clean box, and mum and kittens seem happy.

Mom has not eating or been drinking yet after labor, which was around 7 hours ago. When should she start eating/drinking ?

The other girl is still fairly pregnant, if i compare her to her sister she will have to go another week before shes due.

They are precious! It sounds like things went pretty well. Glad you were able to help her out!

Have you brought mom a dish of wet food or water straight to her nest? I find that nest service does the trick, as they are exhausted and do not like to get up right away.

You are a hero sarthur2!

I put on my apron and served my brave girl wet kittenfood.... she ferociously attacked it as soon as it was in her reach :D

No lies, she actually got up for it. Half. Ish.

Thanks for easing my mind on that one!

Hurray!!!

They are usually famished after labor and delivery, but don't want to leave their babies.

Put her litter box right nearby too! [emoji]128521[/emoji]

Oh thanks guys, makes me feel like i did a good job being a cat-doula!

And oh i wish they could all clump up and be one happy family when the next batch arrives... keeping my fingers crossed that everything will go as smooth as with Sally.

Concerning sexing these kittens - if i take pictures in a couple of weeks... will you guys assist me in that?

btw: her litterbox is right next to her box, so she should be good.

God i feel like a 10 year old, im so in love with these kittens!

Goodmorning!

So we all got through the night safe and sound. I weighed the kittens this morning and they gained: 15, 11,10 and 7 grams.

The one that gained 7 grams is also a screamer, its not been 24 hours when i weighed them, it would have been after about 17 hours. Is the weightgain of the smallest screamer enough? (im not fiddling with the kitten, just want to keep an eye on it to be sure). She seems fine, no different from the others.

Im so sorry i keep asking, but you guys seem to know everything.

Can momcat eat as much as she wishes? I let her binge-eat while pregnant, but its fine to continue this yes? She got up this morning when i was with her, shes beautifully lean!

thanks again for taking the time to read and answer, its great for people like me (aka -the clueless!-)

I believe the ideal weight gain should be 7-10 minimum a day, and since it hasn't been 24 hours quite yet, I'm sure the kitten is fine.
Since the baby is screaming a lot she could be cold or hungry. You can try moving her to one of the lowest nipples for a little while and see if that helps her gain a little more if you are concerned :)

What precious kittens! I don't know much about mommy and baby cats but I do see Mama cat food in the pet store from Royal Canin. I wonder if that will give her more nutrients?

Also, I think the sister will help with the kittens and vice versa. Mommy needs a break sometimes! She is probably starving from all the milk she has to make. Can't wait to see the other litter!

Yes, mom should continue to eat as much as she wants while nursing. She needs as much as she can get!

The baby is probably gaining enough, but I'd be interested to see what he gains in a full 24 hours.

Thanks so much for the answers.

I wasnt really worried but popped her on the scale at around her birthtime just to check, as mum was having a foodbreak anyways.

Suprisingly enough she had gained another 8grams! Mum and kids are eating like there is no tomorrow, i guess im going to have to order lots more food... soon.. very soon!

thanks so far for the advice, its really great.

Actually one more thing: to get them pottytrained, does mum need to use the same litterbox as the kittens? Cause mum uses a quite high one with a top on, and the kittens are not every going to be able to get over the side of that thing. The reason im asking is that she really dislikes the open low litterbox that i put out in that room.... Can i put her favorite litterbox there without being scared the whole pottytraining will be one big mess or am I in for a party when that comes?

Mom can use her regular big litterbox. No need to upset her.

You'll need a smaller, open, low-sided, kitten sized box for her children. They'll graduate to a full size box when they are bigger. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Hi again!

These little kittens have turned into real fatties... they have been growing around 20-25grams a day but now all of a sudden one of them (not the same one, but 3 days in a row) gained only around 10grams.

The kittens seem to be doing fine and happily warm and sleeping. Is there any reason for concern ?

Thanks again in advance!

No reason, sometimes they level off and other times have a growth spurt. As long as the kitten continues gaining overall it's good! [emoji]128522[/emoji]
