Tavish is a 3 year old, neutered male Siamese. He is always very friendly and loves to be around his people.

Within the last month and a half, my room mate got a female DLH, 9 months old.

The two get along decently.

The issue:  One day after coming home from work, I noticed Tavish had a developed a red bald patch above his eye. It was very alarming, because it had developed so suddenly. I figured the two cats had gotten into a beef and he had gotten bit or scratched. The bump was red and flaky, but he didn't seem bother by it. He wasn't itching it or anything, and it didn't seem painful when I touched it. I decided to keep an eye on it. His appetite was fine and he acted the same. I didn't want to put anything on it since it was right above his eye, one of my coworkers suggested coconut oil so i tried that once but not again.

Two days later, after no improvement I was laying in bed with him and he started to cough/heave repeatedly. I panicked and called the vet right away and got us in within the hour. As soon as I put Tavish in his crate to leave, the coughing stopped.

We got to the vet, she looked him over. His temp was normal. She said it was a 'skin reaction'. But she gave me no ideas as to what it could be from. (She laughed at me when i mentioned the coconut oil thing, this vet has always been so... rude.) They took a cell sample to look for infection and came back saying there wasn't one. and then they charged me $90 and gave me a skin cream (EnteDerm Ointment) to put on him twice a day, and gave me the typical 'bring him back in if it doesnt go away in two weeks).

That was Saturday I brought him in, now its Friday.

Whatever 'it' is is now spreading to the inside of his ear and smaller ones around his face. He is starting to act lethargic and hiding, when I get find him he just wants to lay there and cuddle. While the cuddling is normal for him, he is NOT usually this... groggy?

I called the vet again, obviously very upset. "if the cream seems to make it worse, stop using it and bring him back in". I asked about Ringworm because it kind of looks like that, she said she assumes the vet would have recognized that.

Please try to hold your judgement, but I don't not currently have more money for them to sit and 'try things' on Tavish. He is obviously miserable and I feel awful for him, he is my child. $90 here and $90 there to get absolutely no where is something I can't afford.

I need help. I need ideas. Something to try and move forward with. Please and much thanks.

additional details:

 - Stools/urine are normal

 - Other cat is behaving normal

 - balding scabby spots are only on his face

I would suspect ringowrom since its pspreading especially if he goes outside or has contact with other cats.  Did the vet do a culture for ringworm?

My cat got ringworm when I adopted a little sister for him from a local shelter.  She showed no signs of it until after the sores appeared on him and then they appeared on her, too.  It looked exactly like your photos look.  The vet treated both of mine for ringworm with an oral medication and I had to bathe them with Malaseb shampoo.  I would definitely take him to another vet to have him checked specifically for ringworm.  If you treat him, you also need to treat your room mate's cat.  Some shelter cats are carriers and may show no signs themselves.

It was Ringworm. The kitten is, just as you said, a 'carrier'. I took my blacklight to it the other night and it lit up bright green. I called the vet, furious that they did not did not check even after I had asked them about it. Both cats (and me) are now being treated. They waived the charge for the exam to make up for the ridiculousness.

But now my entire apartment is infected. I am so overwhelmed. My room mate is not helping me at all with cleaning or treating the cats even though it was her kitten that brought it. I need advice and support if possible, I feel like I an in WAY over my head. :(

I can't believe the vet didn't check for ringworm!  But more and more, I am finding that there are not many good vets left.  I would give a lot to find a good holisitc vet, but there are currently none in my area.  The black light always shows that green glow, but it's absolutely ridiculous that you had to diagnose this yourself.  At least they are trying to make up for it.   You're not in way over your head, but it is definitely a pain.  I use a product called PureGreen 24 for cleaning nonporous surfaces.  It kills fungi, viruses, bacteria, even MRSA and it is non-toxic; I don't use any cleaning supplies that can hurt my babies.  You can buy it on Amazon.  Make sure you shampoo after you've washed their bedding, window seats, toys, etc. and cleaned any hard surfaces.  I did use bleach in the laundry for bedding, cat beds and window seat covers, but I believe you could even use the PureGreen 24 in place of bleach in the laundry.

Once mine were on the oral meds from the vet (I'm sorry but I can't remember what they were given now), the Malaseb shampoo worked like a charm.  And surprisingly enough, it wasn't like wrestling a tiger when I shampooed them.  I put a collar on my cat, attached a leash, and tied that to the ceramic soap dish.  I didn't let the faucet water pour down on him or put him in a tub of water.  I got a large plastic cup and got water from the faucet in that and gently poured it over his back.  Then I got some water cupped in my hand to wet his little head and face.  I lathered him well with the Malaseb, making sure to avoid his eyes, wrapped him in a towel and sat on the toilet seat rocking him, talking to him - and singing to him, lol - for the 10 minutes you have to allow the shampoo to remain on the skin.  Then I tied him to the soap dish once again and rinsed him using the cup.  I used a wet washcloth to wash the shampoo near his eyes.  Neither he nor his sister acted frightened or resisted the treatment.  I toweled them off and let them go.  You have to shampoo more than once, so prepare yourself for that.  Your room mate needs to help you.

MaggieMay thank you for your prompt replies. Yes it is insane to me that she didn't check for it right off the bat.
I will have to look into those products, I'd love to find something less toxic to use to clean.all the bedding and cat trees I just tossed. Everything I can is being washed, bagged, and staying at my Boyfriend's til we get this under control. I bought sulfate shampoo from the vet and washed them once on Saturday after the vet and will do it again Thursday.

How long with your babies did it take before things started to go back to normal? Especially if I'm doing this mostly on my own, I have no idea how long to keep them quarantined. Both cats are currently in my bathroom which I clean every day after I give them their medication. How long should they stay in there? When do I know its safe to start bringing stuff back in and replacing what I had to throw? :\

It took two rounds of oral anti-fungals to completely clear the ringworm, which took about six weeks.  Your vet needs to do a culture from time to time to see if the medication is effective.  If I remember correctly, Fritz had a total of three cultures done and Mia had the same.  I know you're probably in shock that it takes six weeks to clear up, but they do not have to be quarantined for that long.  As soon as the vet does a new culture, he can tell you whether it's safe to let them run free.  Also, you said that your room mate isn't helping with any of this.  What about her room, where the kitten stayed?  If it isn't cleaned as well, you will only have to repeat all of this.

I cleaned my room mates room for her over the weekend. I bagged all of her stuff and told her to wash it and not bring it back till this is done. I told her we need to talk tonight, because I seriously might beat her to death with a pool noodle if she makes me do this alone.

Here's something I used to do when I would bathe my dachshund, should work for a cat. To keep shampoo from their eye - put a small dab of Vaseline on your finger. Wipe their eye - they'll blink and close the eye as your finger comes close. The little bit of Vaseline will keep water / shampoo from running into the eye.
