I decided to try my hand at growing some herbs in doors. I haven't had a plant for almost 25 years. Well, I tried my hand at growing a spider plant 3 years ago and it was thriving when someone at work was looking after it for me, but when I brought it home and transplanted it, it died within a few days.
I used to have a lot of plants in the 1980's and early 1990's. I lived in a house with the windows facing west and the plants thrived. Then I moved to a place where the windows faced south, and it was extremely hot in the summer, and the windows were drafty and iced up in the winter. So my plants all died I haven't had success with plants since.
Anyway, my brother gardens and in the winter he brings in some of his herbs and grows them under a light and has fresh herbs all winter long. I don't have a balcony so I invested in a hydroponic grow garden. It was a bit pricey. I initially planned on starting the herbs from seeds but I bought the wrong type of soil; the kind that feeds for 6 months, which according to the girl in the hydroponic store said would be too strong and would likely kill the seeds.
So I bought ready to go plants. I haven't transplanted them into the garden's containers yet, but I will eventually do that. The garden has some kind of fibre mat that the planters sit on and you add water to the base and the mat absorbs it and self waters the planters.
I have:
Parsley
Oregano
Basil
Thyme
Rosemary.
If this garden works out I'm going to get another and plant a variety of lettuce.
And if that works out, I'm going to invest in a taller bookcase or shelving unit and use grow lights instead of a grow garden. This way I can hang the lights above the shelves and turn each shelf into a garden. I'll put some house plants, and try planting some other things like dill or maybe some peppers.
