I have a 5 1/2 - 6 month old cat named Mordecai, and i really wanted to find out what breed he is. He was given to me from a friend of a friend so i have no idea who his parents are or what they look like. I live in Australia. Hes one of the most loving cats I've had. He is definitely a lap cat, but also like his independence to go out and hunt in the garden. Nearly every time he gets on my lap he licks my shirt and kneads my tummy and purrs loudly. I thinks that the biggest compliment i get from him. He is quite friendly and never even moves when my four year old comes running past him. He comes when hes called, hes always down for a pat and cuddle. He doesn't meow much only when its dinner time and im getting his food ready. We have a small dog and Modecai loves her and want to play and cuddle with her but shes an old girl and its taken her a while to warm up to him and his persistent nature.

What is it about these black cats that just steals my heart. I still remember how silky my Max's fur was when I stroked him. I love these pictures of your cat hugging the dog. That is just too sweet. Thank you for sharing.

Just wondering what features do you go by in determining what would make him a domestic medium haired opposed to a different breed :)

The easy answer is, if the owner dont knows, ie dont have any paperwork nor known background, its a domestic.

The real, more complicated answer is, we do try anyway to find what a look alike the cat is.   And sometimes, we do even find a supposed domestic, is almost surely a purebred.   This feels very nice and important to me.  I do have this feeling, every child and orphan has the right to get known hers parentage.   Perhaps influenced by all these sagas and children books,  Frances Hodgson Burnett you know   :)

Here, I simply dont recognize any clear cut alikeness to an established breed in Mordecai.   Thereby not said there isnt none.   :)

Btw, not that usual name for a cat. Biblical, no?

The story of Esther and Purim, where every pious Jew shall celebrate this happening by drinking so much he no longer recognizes the difference between the good Mordecai and the evil persian minister??

thank you for clearing that up, ive been searching on the net heaps and really thought he resembled a norwegian or siberian forest cat haha. I actually got the name from the game borderlands and thought the hebrew meaning for mordecai, warrior, was perfect for a cat :)
