Rex, an approximately 9 months old, male, outdoor cat who was born on my door step is in very critical condition.

His siblings died a few weeks after they were born. He looked like he was about to go as well but somehow made it to be a very handsome, extremely friendly cat. He always hang out outside my place and i would feed him regularly.

A little over a month ago, he disappeared without a trace. Asked neighbors but no one had seen him. A week later, he shows up, slightly limping. Besides the limp, he looked perfectly fine. I though he probably strained himself and decided to watch him for a day or two as i see it all the time, cats getting injured, limping and fully recovering by themselves shortly afterwards.

But the 2nd day he was gone again. Looked everywhere but couldn’t find him. 2 weeks later, he shows up in a much worst condition. He could barely stand or walk on his hind legs. He couldn’t balance himself on his back legs as if they couldn’t bare his weight, uncoordinated, so his back-end would rock and drop from side to side as he tried to walk. He was hungry because he came out to eat with the other cats but wouldn’t eat. So i took him in. Tried to feed him again what he loved most – chicken, but he would just lick it but not eat. He also barely drank.

The next day, i took him to the vet and from the physical examination, he said that he was most probably infected with some kind of virus and that he wouldn’t be able to tell what virus until he ran some tests, which would cost a minimum of $700, which is way beyond what i can afford. He also said that if indeed it turned out to be a virus deal, there wouldn’t be much that could be done besides just treating the symptoms and letting his immune system fight it off. He said he didn’t seem to have been physically injured.

So I took him back home and administered SQ fluid and force fed him every day. Also gave him antibiotic (injection) and Analgin (injection) for pain every day.

It's been a week now and his situation never got better. On the contrary, it seems to be getting worst. When i first got him, he could barely move but he could use the litter. Now he won’t move at all. He wasn’t lethargic, seemed to be very aware but didn’t want to move. He seemed to be in extreme pain as he was moaning all the time and although he is the gentlest soul, he would jump and cry and bite when you touch him somewhere along his lower back and tale. Suspecting that he got injured in that area, I did an x ray, but nothing abnormal showed up. In order to do the x ray, i had him drugged with Xylazine, 0.5ml. Now he is even worse than he was before. Its been over 24 hours since the x ray and he has been laying on his side, breathing rapidly. He moans and cries when you try to move him. I want to put him to sleep but i can't afford the crazy prices. Absolutely no organization around here to help with euthanasia (I’m not in the US). So now i don’t know what to do. Any idea what his condition might be. Do the symptoms sound familiar to you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry that he is in such bad shape. I don't really know what it could be, I only have experience with kitty colds when it comes to viruses. Maybe you could look up symptoms for cat viruses and see if any match what you are observing? It does sound like he is in lots of pain. I feel so bad, the only thing I can think is to try and keep him hydrated and fed if you can. I don't know if you think he might still make it, but Lysine is supposed to help fight off viruses.

I'm skeptical about it being a virus, at least in my experience. Are his back paws cold to the touch? Could maybe be a saddle thrombus, although I would think your vet would have considered that. A saddle thrombus occurs when a blood clot is thrown and blocks blood flow to the hind limbs. Think of it being like getting the pins and needles feeling in your foot but much worse. This can occur at any age for no apparent reason. It can be diagnosed using blood glucose readings from a front paw vs readings from a back paw. The two numbers will be very different. I'd call your vet and ask if this is something they considered.

You can try giving him his gel to make sure he's getting proper nutrients.

Also very important to keep him hydrated, so if you have a little eye dropper to drip it into his mouth.

Other than that, you can give him up to your local shelter and they could help him I'm sure and let him heal and put him up for adoption.

My vet has a card called CareCredit. It's like a credit card, where this company loans you money if you're approved and you can make payments back. Try going onto their website and seeing if your vet uses it or you could ask them.

I'm sorry your kitty is in such bad shape. [emoji]128533[/emoji]
