First off, thank you to everyone on this site. I feel like I can come here and get more first hand info than at my vet's office.

Three months ago I adopted a two year old cat from a shelter. Last evening I helped him cross the rainbow bridge due to wet FIP.

I am heart broken. He was such a loving cat.

My issue is that the vet I went to last evening was not my regular vet (who is on vacation). This vet pretty much told me that my other two cats have a death sentence and I will have to put them down. Is this accurate?

Thank you.

I am by no means an expert and there are probably others on this site who can give you more detailed info, but I'll tell you what I know from my personal experience.

The vet thought my cat had the wet form of FIP a few weeks ago. It turned out he didn't (his bladder ruptured, but that's an entirely different story). I spent 24 hours waiting for the fluid sample the vet collected to be interpreted and preparing to euthanize my cat. The vet told me he didn't know what else it could be. Turns out the fluid on his abdomen was urine from a ruptured bladder.

During all of this, I asked my vet about my other cat catching it (they are from the same litter, got them both at a shelter) and he did not act at all as though the other cat would have to be put down. While I do believe your other cats would have a somewhat higher chance of getting FIP, I would definitely get a second opinion from a different vet.

Your other cats may well have the virus that can morph into FIP, but that doesn't mean they will get FIP. I think FIP is pretty rare.

Thinking of you and your kitties. Keep us updated. I can understand your fear/concern at the moment!!

Hi nenna71.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost this little one.

I'm concerned on a couple of fronts about what you've written. I don't understand how that diagnosis could have been made so quickly through a single one-time assessment....compounding that is that you now believe that FIP is contagious. It is NOT.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

Is FIP Contagious?

Very simply, the answer is no.

So, really, let that thought go....grieve for the one but don't worry about the others.

My advice, though, would be to keep any other cat away from the Vet you saw last night.

There are some people online who can give you some more informed advice about FIP than I can......I would really encourage you to copy your post and put it in front of them. Here's some info about them that I gave to another member a few days ago:

There are specialized online communities for almost every one of the chronic feline diseases/conditions....FIP is no different.

This FIP community has been running since 2002 and has served more than 2500 people and their FIP kitties.........surely, if anyone is going to have answers to your questions, it will be them !

You can find them here:  https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FIPCatSupport/info

(I'd advise you to set up a new dedicated email account for the group (they use email as their "operating platform) - for me, that really helps me manage the info flow.)

I hope this will help you.
