I have a litter of kittens who are 10wks old. The runt is suddenly starting to act strange and in worried. I'm trying to find a vet that will let me make payments because I don't get paid for 2 more wks so I thought someone might have some knowledge in the meantime

(Sorry, part 2 is below. I accidentally hit submit and didn't see the ediy butten until I had posted part 2)

She was originally the runt but through use of kmr she is now the second largest. She was always playful and the one that wanted to sleep in our arms the most.

Suddenly a few days ago she started to only want to be in the kitchen. If we pick her up and bring her in the living room, she will stay in our arms for a few moments then suddenly jump out and fly as fast as she can into the kitchen. Almost as if she's scared to be in here. As soon as she crosses the threshold she will stop and lay down. Sometimes she will even lay right in the doorway, but will not cross the threshold except to drink water which is right past the door. Then her limbs shake, like she's cold.

We've tried putting a cat bed, blankets and towels since shes laying in a cold floor, but she won't use them. She will still play with her siblings sometimes but only if they go in the kitchen.

She still eats, drinks and uses the bathroom normally. It's just like she's terrified of this room. And even if we go to hold her in the kitchen she'll stay for a few mins then suddenly jumps out!

I've never seen anything like it. All her siblings are behaving completely normal. If anyone has any thoughts i would greatly appreciate them.

Thank you for your time and consideration

Sounds like something has spooked her in the living room and the kitchen is her safe place.

Are you planning on keeping all the kittens and mom? We'd love to see photos!

I agree that this doesn't sound like cause for alarm. Maybe she's just gotten feisty, or maybe she was spooked.

And just a reminder that mom can be spayed now, and kittens can be spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed!

Thank you so much for your quick responses! That's really good to hear!

Originally we had intended to find them homes. This was an accident because I didn't know that male cats could still apparently impregnate for a few days after neutering and in my ignorance let them be together (I could only afford to do one at a time!)

However, we are completely bonded to these babies now and have decided to keep everyone as well as the parents. It's the only way to ensure they all have a great home! The dad is already done, and the mom will be spayed in 2 wks and we will start on the kittens next. None of them are outdoor so we shouldn't have this problem again!

I will definitely post pics soon.

Thank you so much!

That's great! How many kittens? You may want to do all the boys first so you never have this problem again. It's also usually cheaper.

I agree that something perhaps spooked her. She will probably get over it in time.

Have you checked area clinics and your local Humane Society for low-cost spay and neuter services? I too kept an entire cat family, and used my local Humane Society to spay/neuter my kittens. It was much cheaper than the private vet. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

There's 5 kittens. 1 boy and 4 girls. That's exactly what we planned on :) get the boy done after mom, then work on the girls as fast as possible to reduce any chances of pyometra.

When we originally planned to adopt them out we gave them "names" based d on their color patterns (all mostly grey and extremely similar) just so we'd be able to reference them to each other, but not bond to them.

But now we're bonded and they have very silly names lol, but we don't feel right changing them.

So now we have: runt or little one (for obvious reasons), ash (light grey), greyson (DK grey) and "the twins" who are exactly the same except one has 1 white boot and the other has 2 white boots, so they are aptly named Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr Suess. And of course their parents The Ghost and The Darkness.

So I've successfully gone from not being a cat person to the "crazy cat lady" with 7 cats. Altho I do have a husband so maybe that helps lol

I did check around, and I found that the only low cost place is through the humane society. However, they bus the cats to a place 3 hrs away and keep them overnight then bus them back. It makes me a little hesitant. But I would hope if they do this all the time they are responsible and safe? They are the only low cost place in my area.

Strange. My Humane Society clinic is right here in town. But it sounds like they are providing a convenient service for those who need it. Three hours each way is a big trip!

The Humane Society itself us right here in town, but apparently they don't do the surgery here. There's a clinic in the more southern part of the state that apparently only does spay/neuter and rabies if needed but no other vet services. Apparently all the town's around here use them. The local Humane Societies basically just take the appointments and provide transportation.

My in laws went to the Humane Society in their town a few years back and they were bussed to the same place. But the length of trip does really concern me. We are so bonded with these kittens and their parents! We went to a local vet for the Dad but we weren't expecting 6 more to do at that time! Should I be concerned about the kittens having any separation anxiety with such long trips and an overnight away? Especially since we're probably going to have to send them one at a time? If so, perhaps I can get a local vet to give me a "group rate" :)

I can tell you they will most likely be frightened, and of course clueless about what's going on. Some animals get car sick too. I would have trouble sending mine away like that.

I'd first ask a local vet for a group rate, and compare prices. Maybe the vet can do 2 full price and 2 half price for you (which is paying for 3 and getting one free). But most importantly, if the Humane Society is the cheapest, quickest way to get it done, they will forget about it once they are safely back home.

Thanks for the advice. I will try to find a local vet. Maybe the one that did the dad will work with me since they will have 7 new clients for it. And luckily there's only 1 boy, so it gives me a bit to work with in the other 4 girls
