My cat just had a cystotomy two weeks ago (ugh...5 inch scar from umbilical cord to pubic region...poor guy)! Surgeon and vet strongly recommended one of the three prescription diets that have such cheap ingredients like by-products and fillers like corn flour. Really? And at that price? I'm going to ask my vet...and other vets...if Dave's urinary formula will help with his stones (the calcium oxolate stones must be removed by surgery...they cannot be dissolved. But can they be prevented? Still learning).

I would also love to hear other's thoughts. My cat also had bladder surgery 2 weeks ago to repair a rupture (has a he incision just like you described). He had blocked a few times before and they removed a ton of crystals during the surgery. He is having the PU surgery today to hopefully prevent re-blocking in the future.  He is currently on canned Science Diet c/d and the ingredients don't look that great to me but I'm too afraid to switch him to anything else after everything that has happened over the past several weeks.

I don't really know about diets for calcium oxolate stones?  They usually involve urine that is too acid and many of the diets and diet recommendations are for struvite crystals which are caused by urine that is too alkaline.  Calcium oxolate stones used to be very rare.  Pet food manufacturers started adding an amino acid that acidifies the urine to combat the at that time more common struvite crystals.  Now it is about 50/50 as to the type of crystals and stones found.

BrookB923 do you know which type of crystals your kitty had?

I'm not sure what type of crystals/stones he had. I didn't even know to ask that question until researching it more after this all happened. I think my vet has been more concerned with Harry just eating anything in general after his bladder surgery - he was in the vet for 7-8 days and refused to eat the entire time (he HATES the vet). Since he has been home, though, he has thankfully had a great appetite. I have added that to my list of questions to ask the vet when I pick up Harry after his PU surgery so we can hopefully pinpoint the best diet for him. Thanks for helping me learn about all of the questions I need to ask!
