Hi all. I was hoping someone who has fed a raw diet to kittens could help me. When we get our new kittens I was thinking of using some high quality canned food and introducing the different raw proteins slowly and individually. Is this a good approach, or would it be better to just go completely raw as soon as they would accept it? Part of my reasoning here is that it's better for me to go slowly, because I'm inexperienced and a bit nervous--I don't want to endanger a growing baby animal. I am also interested in using some more unusual proteins, like the ground mouse or guinea pig from HT and maybe frog or rattlesnake. These would be a fairly small portion of the diet, as they are expensive, but I wondered if anyone is using more exotic meats and what their experiences were. Lots of learning to do here, and I want to know as much as possible before we bring new kitties home:) Thanks!

Kittens can start on raw right away but you can start with canned food and then transition to raw later
My Aby has been eating raw since he was weaned and grew up just fine
I didn't give him any extra supplements (kitten canned food, gel type supplements, etc) but I know there are people who like to give growing kittens plenty of nutrition.

I think the most exotic meat I've fed to the cats was HT goat. Both cats liked that. I'm a little reluctant to feed mouse because I currently have 3 rescued mice and while the cats leave the mice alone, I don't want them to somehow associate a meal of mouse with the three live ones

A bit OT, but may I ask where you rescued the mice from? All the folks I know with pet rodents have bought them from stores/breeders. Just curious.

I have two kittens who are close to 5 months ols and I transitioned them to raw several weeks ago because they were having persistent diarrhea, even though we'd cleared up all parasites. They had been eating grain-free wet food and when I first gave them raw they ate around it. I started mixing raw and wet (mostly wet) and was able to work them up to all raw pretty quickly...I think they were on all raw within 3-4 days. I think they just had to get used to something new. It's really helped their poop situation, which is why I switched.

I started with Rad Cat, but the local store where I bought it ran out and I had to go somewhere else and I was able to get Primal frozen nuggets. The Primal nuggets seemed much more dried out and kind of freezer burned and one of the kittens wouldn't eat it. I just switched them back to Rad Cat and the kittens went nuts over it—they climb up me while I'm spooning it out and they inhale it as soon as I put it down. Maybe I got a bad batch of Primal but the Rad Cat just looks fresher and better. Based on their reactions, my two would definitely endorse Rad Cat.
