Hi guys new here. My niece found a newborn kitten with the placenta attach to it. As always they end up at my door late at night. This was Wednesday last week. I got a heating pad, kitten powder milk a bottle and some canned pumpkin for cats. He is doing amazing I'm feeding him every three hours around the clock. My question is if what I'm doing is correct or I need to change. I prepare the milk with flavorless pedyalite and I put in the mix a little bit of pumpkin. I been doing this for almost a week should I stop using pedyalite and pumpkin or I can continue with the same diet ??

hi and welcome to TCS!

thank you for taking in and caring for the newborn kitten! it sounds like you're doing quite well.

have you been weighing the baby? if you can weigh him/her once a day at about the same time of day, you'll be able to make sure the baby is gaining weight properly each day.

i'm going to 'page' a kitten expert or two, since your post is in the Nutrition forum and so our kitten experts may miss it.

@sarthur2, @Handsome Kitty -- may i ask for your expertise for the OP (original poster)?

Hi, welcome!

I want to say if he is doing fine, don't change anything.  We don't usually add pumpkin to KMR and pedialyte is added to counter diarrhea.

Are you weighing the kitten?  Does it have a name?  You want to see a minimum of 6 - 10 grams/.2 -.4 ounces a day.  Weigh the kitten at the same time - their weight fluctuates throughout the day just like ours does.  Knowing the kittens weight will also tell you how much you should be feeding.  It will need 8ml/cc per ounce of weight during a 24 hour period.  Since you are feeding  every 3 hours or 8 times during 24 hours, just give him his weight in ounces, as your KMR ML per feeding.  Does that make sense?  You would normally multiply the weight by 8ml then divide by the number of feedings.

I agree.  Obviously you are doing nicely, as the most difficult period is done now. Now it should go a shade easier.   A lucky part is the kitten never got used to suckling momma (although hay have got the colostrum).  Kittens whom are used to momma, are often very reluctant to take bottle.   And a bottle is much e asier for the rescuer than a needleless syringe...

Dont change a winning team, they say.  So continue your receipts, although they arent the usual standard.  Unless you know better solutions.

Exactly what sort of kmr milk do you have?

Hi guys the KMR brand is PetAG. I talk to the vet yesterday and he told me to continue with the same formula for at least 2 weeks then not to continue with the pumpkin and switch to water instead of the pedyalite. And yes he is being gaining weight and size too.

That is a very good formula.   As the vet said, its seldom necessary to dilute the powder with pedialyte, and pumkin isnt used on so young cats.  But if it worked for you so it worked.   :)

So NOW we do know pumpkin can be tried on such young kittens. Hitherto Iwouldnt dare to suggest such experimentation.   :)

Yes, you can use the stage one of this powdered PetAg formula also when older, dont bother to switch to stage II type.

However, if you can get full fat goats milk, this is useful as supplement and even as decent emergency kmr for any age.      So if you wish to make change later on, try with goats milk instead of this stage II.

Wow! It sounds like you've been doing a fantastic job with this tiny kitten! His mom probably dropped him while moving her kittens, unless he got dumped. Thank you for your efforts to rescue him. Keep up the nice work!

We'd love to see a picture of him when you can. [emoji]128522[/emoji][emoji]128077[/emoji]

He's a cutie, but tiny!

How many mLs of kitten formula is he drinking, and how many times per day?

I suggest you add a few drops of olive oil to his milk before you feed him. The oil will help with constipation.

Do you know how much he weighs today? That will help us to know if he's getting enough to eat. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Ah, she not he!

She is eating and growing well! [emoji]128149[/emoji]

Just add some oil to the formula. Once in awhile they skip a day of pooping.
