We believe that our 12 year old female, Shadow, is depressed. Over the past three months we lost both of her older companions to kidney disease. We've been trying to transition her diet, since she was sharing prescription diet food with her sister who passed away in April. We also got her a new friend, a one year old named Izzi. Shadow is usually playful and follows me around all day looking for pets and attention. But since Saturday, which was an unusually stressed out day for my wife and I, she hasn't been eating and has been excessively tired. She threw up twice as well.

We had her at the vet yesterday, and they don't feel that there is an underlying medical condition yet, given the circumstances and the tests they ran. We're spoon feeding her high calorie food, but she's still not eating on her own. We also got a feliway spray and isolated the kitten. We're trying to play with her, but she's not super interested. She'll snuggle with us, and she purrs when we pet her, but that's about it right now. The vet has prescribed an antidepressant for a few days and an antibiotic just in case. Any other suggestions or things we can do?

This came on quick. We knew she was likely stressed, but she was getting by until Saturday. The vet said that it can happen this way, any other similar experiences?

@jsboss13... Sending you condolences on losing two cats to kidney disease, and also strong vibes that your Shadow gets better, soon.

Was it the vet who suggested transitioning Shadow's food?

(I ask, because may rainbow cat Spotty, had a hard time getting used to his K/D kidney cat food, and also threw up, a lot, in the beginning. He was on it for about a year and a half.)

So maybe transitioning her off her old food, is causing some upset stomach problems. If you can take photos of what she throws up, and show it to your vet, ...that might help, too.

At this point, I would try to get Shadow to eat any and all food she likes. (Wellness has some pretty good canned food flavours, and soft consistency. But any food she likes would be good.)

The antibiotic may also make her feel like throwing up, or nauseous, and so I would make sure to call the vet, daily if need be, to ask about Shadow not eating, and if anything can be prescribed, like Nutrical, or some critical care A/D food, or anti nausea meds/ appetite stimulant.

I really hope your Shadow can get back to eating, and drinking, and feeling like her old self.
