Hi everyone, new to the site! I've often searched Google for answers to my questions and been directed here so seems I'm in the right place! My 6 month old Kitten Bear has been eating a natural chicken breast and rice tin food since I got him. Now it is out of stock!!! I've tried him on some other food for the past 7 days and he doesn't seem to like it very much and it has also given him the runs. The adult version of his original food is still in stock, would it be ok to start feeding him this even though he is only 6 months?

Can you mention the brand? if not discontinued perhaps another poster may find some info for you. Your location would be helpful as well.

Any photos of your kitten to share?  we love pictures here!

Welcome to the site

Sure, here's a photo of little Bear. He was wild, I found him and 3 others outside when they were about 6 weeks old.

The food is called Applaws, I'm in NZ and only one supermarket stocks it here. I've been to all of them in my area and brought what they had on the shelf. Haha now I can't seem to get it anywhere!!

Bex99:

You said you were in NZ and if the link that was provided by Draco is correct and that is what you are feeding, the Applaws chicken and rice canned food is NOT complete and balanced, it does not contain the vitamins and minerals necessary to meet the nutritional requirements of an adult cat, much less a kitten. Taurine is an essential amino acid that must be in cat food, among other nutrients. Calcium, B vitamins are among other vitamins that must be included. Without taurine cats can lose their eyesight.

Please note that Applaws indicates their tin and pouch food is for intermittent and/or supplemental feeding only, at least the ones listed here in the US.

Check the ingredient label to be sure, there is another supplemental food, Almo, whose products in the US are unbalanced, but in the UK are sold with the vitamins / minerals, I'm just not entirely sure about Applaws in NZ.

Here's the Australian web site for Applaws: http://applawspetfood.com.au/product-category/cat-food/

Are you feeding this one? http://applawspetfood.com.au/product/cat-tin-chicken-breast/ If yes, then it is not a complete diet since it doesn't contain any of the essential vitamins and minerals a cat needs. None of the Applaws foods except for the dry foods are complete diets. They are only "complementary" foods aka treats or as fed as a topper to regular cat food.

Please find a different brand of food to feed to your cat. Nutritional deficiencies can develop is your cat continues to only eat the Applaws. ZiwiPeak is a New Zealand brand. That is a good complete balanced brand you can feed.

Thanks you everyone, I did not realize this was a complementary food.

I feel a bit bad now, but I figure I saved him from the wild so it would be better than what he was eating out there as a feral.

I will change his diet now that I am aware, thanks LTS3 for your reccomendation of ZiwiPeak. I will look into it.

Does anyone know of any options which are not a jelly meat as such and have low smell?

That was one of the reasons I really liked Applaws.

Thanks for your help!!!

I found this New Zelanad online retailer: http://www.pet.co.nz/cat/food-3/filter/food-type-canned-wet-food-t-50

Go! is a good brand you can try. The Primal brand seems ok. The Meowing Heads brand seems interesting and is a complete diet.

Addiction is a good brand but it looks like only the dry food is sold in New Zealand: http://www.addictionpetfood.co.nz You may have to buy the canned food online.
