Hi, I'm contemplating using some old air tight cat litter containers as trash cans. I get ants so I usually hang the trash on a railing outside, but want to transition away from using liners. I read that cat litter breeds harmful bacteria in anaerobic conditions, and was wondering if I had a trash container for around a week to two weeks, with the air tight lid on it, would I be subjecting myself to potential health problems?

I would like to leave the lid off to avoid methane release, but am afraid additional pests will be attracted to it. I get sporadic incidences of cockroaches in warmer months, and would prefer not to increase them.

Any suggestions?

A happy belated welcome to TCS!
I'm really sorry you haven't gotten a reply before now, especially on your first post!  It doesn't usually take this long for a post to be answered.  If I understand it, you want to dump used litter into an airtight container but won't be able to dispose of it for one to two weeks?  And you're wondering about health hazards?  It seems to me that as long as you leave it sealed up, there is no danger to you whatsoever but if you are opening it  periodically to add more soiled litter to it, you might want to wear a dust mask.  You could also try adding a disinfecting powder to it each time to keep bacterial growth down.

Since you new, perhaps you would like to introduce yourself and your cat(s) at the New Cats On the Block forum?  http://www.thecatsite.com/f/20/new-cats-on-the-block  Be sure to include photos!

Thank you, Margd. And when I'm on a computer I'll try to remember to post pictures.
